Yay.... fitted my MDI today.
« on: June 29, 2010, 03:52:08 pm »
As title, mananged to pick up a brand new MDI unit for the centre console complete with USB and Ipod cables dead cheap off the bay, and then purchased the Kufatec harness direct from them. Total cost, just over £100.

Fitted it today, and it works great. The hardest part was removing the old ipod prep cable that I had (the one with the plug in "shelf" that emulated the CD changer, and then getting the new cable in. Did it eventually by removing the outer cover of the rear arm rest assembly.

Works like a dream, once I fathomed out how to turn up the volume on the unit, as it was sounding quieter than all the other sound sources. A quick trip into the setup menu on the RNS and setting the AUX IN volume to medium (it was set to low) worked a treat. Super happy.

Just one quick question, does everyone's default back to the [Song] folder when searching. Is there a way of getting it to search where it left off or setting a folder (say Playlists) ?

Aside from this little irk, I'm well pleased. The Kufatec loom is certainly PNP, and my Parrot handsfree working though it's own CAN harness plugged in a treat.

Even works with my Ipod Touch as well as my 80 gb 5th Generation. The earlier Ipod prep wouldn't work with the Touch, the Touch kept saying "unsupported accessory connected" ?

So much music, so little time to play it.......

Tip top bit of kit isn't it?

I also like Kufatecs stuff.
The only thing I'd say about the MDI is it'd make the RNS-510 the best machine in the world if it featured it out the factory, i.e. you didn't have to purchase it as a separate module  :happy2:

Darren,

Cheers mate  :happy2:

To answer your question, on the RNS a new button appeared at the top of the display on the right hand side (where the ghosted AUX was) that said "MEDIA-IN", and on the Highline it says "MDI" in the lower left corner, where it normally says either "SD" or "HDD".

Works a treat.

Also, read somewhere that the MDI control box part of the shelf can be detached, and the unit can then be fitted in the glovebox (if you had a car without a centre console) - maybe a solution ? I know that VW sell an MDI unit like this for exactly that reason and I believe it's the same part just without the shelf thingy around it ?

cheers

Andrew

Thats interesting as I bought Steve P's old MDI for the armrest but as I don't have the older Ipod prep in my armrest I'd have to buy the armrest internals with the cut out I need and the new ducting for the a/c. If I can detach the MDI plug and put in the glovebox I'd also save the space as well as money -  Do you know where there is a guide for this?

Can't find that actual page I was looking at Rob, but have found a few pictures that hopefully explain it. The MDI comes in the non shelf version apparently for a number of models in cluding the passat.

The shelf can be carefully removed from the MDI control box (it's a bit of a b*tch apparently) to leave this :

From this:

The actual unit can be mounted just ahead of the ashtray out of site thus..

Then using a VW IPOD/MDI extension cable the cable can be plugged in and routed though the small hole at the back of the glovebox

Hope this helps ?

Rob thats how I've now got mine but mine is in the little cubby hole on the right of the steering wheel,

There is 2 screws in the mdi shelf take them out then the plastic bar that goes across the mdi shelf needs prising up a bit to then pull the module out of the shelf.

Andrew I get the MDI in the highline but get MDI not Media-In on the RNS510?? not really bothered as long as it works which it does with my Nokia 5800 :happy2:

Morty,

I've been trying to release my MDI from the armrest mount for about an hour now and its driving me up the wall.

So far I taken the 2 T20 screws out and it won't budge you say pry the plastic bar up do you mean this one:

PS Obviously this is not mine

EDIT: Just done it found two indents either side of the bridge and slid a small screw driver under each releasing the MDI from the mount.  :happy2:

Darren, maybe it's a firmware thing ? After all, I am running quite an oldish firmware with 1100, I suspect yours is much newer ?

Don't suppose by any chance they have implimented a search function yet using the same alpha numerical keypad they use for the Navigation address entering ? (Or am I just wishing ?)

Darren,

Where did you fit the actual MDI box for the drivers side cubby hole install. I taken the cubby hole out and there ain't much space behind there??
