That LED RNS looks superb... always something new to lust after

Cheers for the info on the software update, the battery drain issue is the reason I've avoided updating my RNS. So I should look for firmware update 2680 then?
May as well update the map while I'm at it...

This is what VRS Carl believed to be on this update and he has been proved right !!!!!!

At the moment ! (i need to check the battery before we have a party)

Soooo...sorry for being thick can someone possibly tell me if my thinking on this is correct?

An RNS510 with software/firmware version 2680 on it will NOT cause battery drain issues on an older GTI (I have a MY06).

Does the version of the RNS matter in this regard? I am looking at getting a Version A..... ? Which I believe is already upgraded to this level.

If so, then I can effectively plug and play on my car which is foooking magic...  :jumpmove:

Don't want to pi$$ on anybodys chips, but I fitted an RCD510 two weeks ago and didn't upgrade the Can gateway on my '06 GTI.  I used the car every day for the following week and the battery was fine, until last saturday when I didn't use the car at all. Went to start it on the sunday morning and the battery was completely dead. I've since taken the fuse out for the radio and am waiting on my local VW 'specialist' advising me whether or not I need a new Can gateway or otherwise.

Can anybody on here tell me whether the RNS510 and RCD510 are similar in terms of Can gateway and Firmware requirements??   I can't stand driving around without music!!!

Cheers lads.

They are similar BUT you can't use RNS510 Firmware in RCD510. You would have to obtain a firmware disc for the RCD510 which apart from VW i don't know where you could get one (thats even if the dealers have it as they generally don't do firmware upgrades unless it's advised by the manufacturer)

You can always put in a new gateway but i can't guarantee that will fix it

Have you any idea what Can gateway/part number I'd need?

Try this Link

Can Gateway Clicky

Or if you don't trust the seller then the part no. is 1K0907530AD (although the last 2 letters may now be AF) take that to a Dealer and they will tell you wether it has been superseded :happy2:

All RCD 510s that I've seen have always caused a problem with the battery drain unless the gateway is L or above

I've only ever seen a firmware upgrade for the RCD once, and that doesn't appear to be floating around anywhere at the moment

Thanks again Carl. Much appreciated.  :happy2:

Thinking more about this, would VW themselves not be able to sell me the correct part, presumably at a much higher cost?  :scared:

Also, surely they'd be able to tell me if installing the new Can gateway would actually solve the problem? Only trouble is that I bought the RCD510 off Ebay, so VW may not want to touch it.  :sad1:

Cheers Camel. Pardon my stupidity, but can you clarify what you mean by 'L or above'?

L is the version of the gateway

They used up all the single letters then went to AA...AD and now they are at AF

Gateway from the dealer is about £150

Unless you are lucky and have a technician at the dealer that really knows his stuff, doubt they will have a clue. Plenty of information on the internet which all points to upgrading older gateways resolves the problem

RCD510s were never installed in the Golf V from the factory, so it won't be in their knowledge base

I've helped upgrade two gateways a C and a E to a S and a AD for people who have fitted RCD510s  and they no longer suffer from a flat battery
