How's this for a DSG/Cambelt/Water pump price?

Hey folks,

Following on from my rant at main dealers not wanting the work, I phoned another dealer which is closer to home (but further from work) and was greeted completely differently! Literally - shock horror- they were helpful from start to finish, even mentioning tea & biscuits, which was almost the deal clincher alone! :party: Anyway the quote was;

For;

Cambelt & Water pump (if I supply the water pump as I said I wanted metal impellor)
DSG Oil & Filter change
Cruise control retrofitted
+ one of their free 34 point visual check things.

£670 for the above.

It seemed expensive at first, but I went to an independant who basically told me they'd charge me £223 just for the labour of doing a cambelt + the price of parts, which was about £95 or so! So once you add the water pump & dsg oil/filter change it probably wouldn't be far off the main dealer price.

How does that compare to other main dealers?

I think for the 'stamp' & warranty it may be worth it mate too.

Funnily enough, I have an Audi garage 2 mins from my workplace - after going in to their to ask them, I didn't even get as far as pulling a chair out before I was bluntly told "no, we don't do things like that, no vw servicing/work"

... I'd forgotten that NO Audi garage dare use any VW parts... Surely not!!! :stupid:

That sounds like a reasonable price for the work involved.

As said, it's nice to have the VW stamp if you've already got full VWSH.   :happy2:

What price did you get for just the belt and pump? Ours will need doing soon and I'm trying to see what the general/average prices are. TIA  :happy2:

Hi Luke, as I asked for it as a job lot im not sure the invidual breakdown, I worked it out like this;

Total = £670


So cruise = £160, DSG = £150, Remaining = £360


So im guessing £360 for cam belt & water pump if I supply the pump, which potentially isn't worth it, as it's £399 for them to do the belt & pump supplying both etc.

Only difference being if you supply your own pump you can get the metal or brass impeller, vs the plastic impeller they supply.

this is how they break it down..i have had a few beers tonight so cant be arsed adding it all up lol

the main dealers i think are coming to terms with the fact that other garages can do decent jobs on cars and are prepared to do deals.. my everyday work car is an A4 s line and last year was getting 3 for 2 servicing .  I think you have to get the right person on the service desk tho as some can be proper mongs!

That looks like a reasonable price mate, I recently had most of that work done at a main dealer:

DSG oil and filter,
Cambelt with water pump
and Long life service

Original total was £800, which included a special for the cambelt at £299, £100 for water pump and fitting, DSG service was about £200, and minor service was £190.

I managed to get the sales department to pony some of the money up which bought it down to £650  :fighting:

But the works your after plus fitting cruise then definately seems like a good deal, especially if you get biccies  :grin:

5Dr Black GTI, DSG, Leather, Xenons. Retrofitted - Cruise, RNS 510, MFSW, Armrest, Skoda BT, 6cd changer, Monza II's, VW speaker upgrade kit, Lux pack, High-line, new CAN gateway, Polar FIS info display, R32 tinted rear lights, RVC

Although I have changed my mind about getting a metal one, as you do not get the warranty of 2 years with that.

If you use whatever VW use, you get 2 years warranty, so if it messes up, it's their fault and they fix it under warranty, seems ok to me... If the plastic ones were THAT bad, im pretty sure they wouldn't still be using them, I also know it was mainly a problem on the 1.8 20VT's in the Previous GTI / Ibiza Cupra etc but i've owned 4 Ibiza Cupra 1.8T's and not one had a water pump problem and all using stock parts.

Not really a problem, just like most cars when the cam belt is changed so should the tensioners and water pump at the same time.

In the 1.8 20VT engines, the water pumps failing was a common occurance, either the plastic impellor would break up into pieces (not good!) or it would come off it's bearing.

The solution was to use a metal impellor, however there has also been talk that the metal ones can also come off their bearing, and that VW/Audi use the plastic impellors for a reason.

If you buy a metal impellor, it's not an genuine part, so you will not get the 2 year guarantee from using an original part, to me, that's not worth the risk after thinking about it.

Makes alot of sense.... My eldest lad has a mk4 golf only 1.6 and his engine has popped as he didnt tell me that he had to keep putting water in and his car was over heating.. turns out waterpump had gone.

Cost Dad £1300!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bizarrely, I called another local VW Dealer, who told me, they will not charge me labour on the water pump fitting, the pricing went like this;

Cambelt & Tensioners £295

Waterpump £44 part only - free labour.

DSG Oil & Filter change £205.

Cruise control retrofit £155.

So the moot point there, is the DSG oil change, seeing as the VW website shows that being £150...

I will mention that, but the problem being, the VW website, shows the cambelt change with a new waterpump being £395...!

So they will probably say we are saving you money on the waterpump...
