Rubber toe - I thought it was brake master cylinders which flipped their seals?

Not 100% if there was problems with the brake master cylinder seals but can't recall doing many .
There was definitely a time when everything from polos to passats had problems with the clutch pedals sticking down :happy2:

Yeah if they wanted to replace the clutch, I'd have gone elsewhere.  Even on my old car, I managed to get the clutch kit for £280 and get it installed for £120.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

My old man had similar on an Audi and it was his Clutch Slave cylinder/release bearing that had gone pete tong.

Okay, the car was dropped off today. They had a passat cc in reserve though this would mean although I could park it in the garage, I wouldn't be able to get it out. I got a VW Fox instead, which was remarkably roomy though still less punchy than my old fiesta 1.25-zetec.

Anyway, they tell me the master cylinder has been replaced (along with an engine cover mount). Will be picking it up tomorrow morning. Anything special that I need to do before I drive off home? Will definitely drive it around for a bit first but is there anything else I should check?

Did changing the master cylinder resolve the problem in the end. I am having a similar problem with my car. My clutch pedal is behaving as you described in a previous post where it springs all the way down with a slight touch and then springs all the way back again. I have the car booked in at a local garage tomorrow and want to know what to expect. There is also a lot of fluid on the road under the car.

I didn't have any issues with fluid but yes, changing the master cylinder sorted out the pedal issue. The only question is whether there was an issue with the slave cylinder which may be masked by the new master (from what I'm led to believe).

I think it would be difficult for the master to "mask" the slave. If the seal was at fault with the slave cylinder you would still suffer from the pedal dropping to the floor.... The pressure would still drop off....? If you have a problem in the near distant future you need to log it with the garage that did the master repair as their "guess" was wrong and they would be obliged to repair the vehicle FOC.....if the warranty department were made aware then the whole claim would be taken back off them...so financially out of pocket on both accounts....and we all know where the dealer decisions are made from ;-)

Well in that case it's been fine and has been so since the master cylinder was replaced in December 2010.

The service advisor asked one of the techs who happened to be passing and he stated it was a common problem on earlier VWs for the master cylinder to fail. They then ordered one in advance and fitted it when I arrived. No problems since.
