Best PC security package? Advice please.
« on: July 30, 2010, 06:15:21 pm »
It seems that a lot of people on here are pretty computer keyed up on PC's etc and I'm in need of some good advice please.

I am currently running a Laptop with Windows 7 and for security I am using Norton 360 V3.0 which I have been really happy with it, or at least everything is running smoother than a prom queens thighs anyway. Its due for renewal in the next few days and was wondering what the best thing to do is? I've browsed the web but its a minefield! I can get the same version of Norton that I have now for around £15.00 but the new one, V4.0 is about £40.00. Then there are the options of a different security package which are plentiful.
Some one told me that I should just use the Windows Firewall and Defender and not to bother wasting my money and someone else suggested that there are freeware programs that do the same job for free?
I use the internet a fair bit and as a man I am prone to accidentally accessing the 'occasional' porn site and so I don't want catch the PC equivalent of the  :congrats: .

Cheers, Chris.

If u don't want to spend money get microsoft security essentials, its free and very good.

If you don't mind spending look at webroot internet security.

Security programs are all personal choice to be honest, any test done they only prove about 70% effective anyway. The rest is down to you!

Personally i run security essentials, even though I get free keys for any of the full paid security programs.

If you have been happy with Norton 360 V3 just renew for the £15, thats cheap. Do you know that you can upgrade to Norton 360 V4 for free on the Norton web site. :happy2:

i used to be an avid avg user untill the latest versions which have become rather bloated and use too many resources IMO

You can get a decent security set up with freeware.

Zonealarm firewall
Avast antivirus (I used to use AVG until it became bloatware)
a-squared anti-malware
spywareblaster
lavasoft ad-aware
spybot search and destroy

The important thing with any anti-spyware/anti-virus software is to do regular scans.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Would the Microsoft Security thing be all I need or should I run something else along side it?

So would i need all of the above to be covered?
