Time & distance service plan??
« on: August 01, 2010, 12:33:05 pm »
Hi guys, I rang up the dealer that I recently purchased my gti from to ask whether I was on a long life service plan. It turns out I'm not and I'm on the time and distance plan. What does this mean and what oil will I need to put in?

Thanks girls & boys.

Hi sorry but I don't know what long life oil is? I was going to buy castrol or something similar and wondered what grade to get? Thanks for your help.   :happy2:

Castrol Edge 5w30 fully synthetic. It will say something along the lines of VW/Audi oil. You're better off on T&D.

T&D is just a yearly plan like normal cars, longlife service uses the cars computer to tell it when a service is needed, its worth noting that if your not careful longlife can be quicker than t&d, my edition 30 was wanting a service before the first year was up (i did it on t&d anyway, just the dealers had wrongly set computer to longlife), plus the longlife services was going to cost more than a t&d one

Longlife services are not recommended by most members for the GTi engine

Edit, beated by 182.

Longlife is variable upto to two years or 20k miles but will typically be a lower depending on the way the car is driven/used.

T&D Is fixed one year or 10k miles, which ever comes sooner.

The oil you want is the castrol edge that is marked as VW507 spec.

For Longlife, you must meet all of the following criteria:
  • Mileage:  more than 30 miles per day.
  • Type of Journey:  Motorway and main road driving.  Mainly longer distance journeys.  Constant speeds.
  • Conditions:  Normal engine loading - eg, with little or no towing, with little or no hill climbs.  Normal vehicle loading.
  • Driving style:  Moderate acceleration, moderate braking, engine revs mainly below 3000rpm.

Anyone who drives a GTI has no business staying below 3000rpm whenever they get in the car.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.
