RNS 510 Firmware
« on: August 12, 2010, 09:32:46 am »
Hi Guys

Im looking to update the firmware on my RNS 510 and have realised that in doing so i will loose my European maps, as my unit didn't come with any DVD is there any way I can backup the maps to a sd card before I update the firmware?

Not all firmwares remove the maps.

272x doesn't for definate. Pretty sure 268x & 276x don't either.

What version is your RNS

If you have a version C RNS it should upgrade fine.

Just ensure you have a genuine unit. Check the security seals and if they are intact you will be fine to upgrade. If they are not you risk bricking the device as it may have had it's EEPROM soldered to reset the security code :happy2:

Be careful I have seen units that still have the seals intact and still brick

All the sellers are doing is replacing the seals with photocopied ones on stickers and cutting the stickers to size, they do look good but you can tell just by running your finger over them...genuine ones will be very thin and feel quite smooth over the edges where has copied ones will have a pronounced lip cos the sticker is quite thick.

Just tried installing firmware 2760 and I get a software error at the start of the installation, ive tried burning to a dvd and a cd both have the same issue. Is there a certain type of disk I need to use, or maybe you cant install version 2760 on firmware 2680, anyone had similar problems?

I installed 2760 onto 1024 firmware so I can't see why not  Have you downloaded the correct firmware? Not one modified for an octavia?

Just checking

Sorry should have said K or above.

The first one is what you want if you have a K or above gateway :happy2:

if your upgrading the firmware then might be an oppertunity to download new maps (i think were on V6 now) and then insert speed camera POI's
i did it, was a doddle and its really helpful in the long run. if you wanna do it you will need:

this guide - http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2092.0
and...
a subscription to these guys for you POI's - http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/

I have some proper OEM look image files which are loads better than the crap ones people have made (if i do say so myself lol)

Leave it on for about 10 mins as the firmwares sometimes delete the Satnav Almanac (directory of where they are in the sky) and it can take 10-15 mins for it to rebuild. Make sure the antenna has a clear view of the sky.
