GTI Vs Edition 30
« on: September 13, 2010, 08:23:43 pm »
Has anyone had both ? is there that much of a performance differance between a stage 2+ GTI and edition 30 ? Ive got to say im happy with the gti, im just thinking im missing out on something with the edition 30 and thinking of a change. Will i really get the most out of all that extra power with it being FWD ?

Its a bit of a daft question, because it depends how far you are going to mod the ED 30.

I have driven both, and when my car was at stage 2, it was pretty much the same speed as a stage one Ed 30 with a APR map, i would say the ED 30 was faster at eh top end of 4th and 5th, but mine had less turbo lag and felt zippy compared to it. Since then i have got about another 30 BHP out of mine.
But saying all this mine could not touch a Ed 30 atstage 2+ i have been in a number of these, and it is a whole different league.  :happy2:

Forgive me my ignorance , but apart from the styling changes (wheels ect) , what makes an ED30 different from a GTI? Hom much is mechanically different?

Lots of bit under the bonnet. KO 4 turbo is the main upgrade, but it also has stronger engine internals as well. It uses the S3 engine.  :happy2:

I've had both, the GTI was stg2 APR'd and the ED30 was stg2+ APR. The GTI was very grunty down the bottom-end but did seem to run out of steam towards the top of the rev range, I think an intake may have helped. The ED30 was just awesome

Well, to be honest, they don't compare, there is a massive difference in power and torque. When i went 2+ and finally fitted a intake, i thought, " sh*t the bed" this is fast now. Then the next day went out in JoesGTI newly fitted Ed30 engine at stage 2+ and it was a whole lot quicker.  :driver:

Mine felt like the map had disappeared on the journey back.

Jesus, yea I thought to myself an edition 30 can't be that much faster, this obviously isn't the case. I think what I need to do is get my self a go in a 2+ edition 30 I was thinking of going k04 in my car but I think it would be better just getting an ed30.

Or just do what Joe did and get a replacement engine. I think it cost him about 2 grand all in, as well as fitting. Not bad for an extra 80 to 90 BHP.  and he got some money back from selling his meccano set original engine

I am not 2+ but give me a shout and you can see what my ed30's like.
TBH though if your going to go from GTI to ED30 I would maybe go all out and get the S3.

I've had a Leon FR (same K03 engine / drivetrain as GTI) and now Ed30, both went from standard to Stage 1 to Stage 2 with the relevant mods. Like others have said the K04 engine'd car is definately quicker, but you need a good stretch of road to notice the difference, its all after 5500 rpm where the K03 starts to tail of the K04 keeps on pulling hard.

If you don't drive it hard until the redline its not really worth the cost to change.

Nah im not really in to changing out engines, that was a really good deal joe got though, id rather just get an edition 30 if it comes to it.
Ive been looking at the times on the 1/4 mile thread and it seems that the average stage 2+ manual k04 puts down a 13.5 there are some quicker but on track tyres the best 0-60 ive had has been a 5.6 and the best 1/4 mile i had was a 14.4 although ive only done 3 runs at the present stage of tune, the first run was completly rubbish with the dsc on   , the second i screwed up the change and the i thought i had far too much wheel spin on my 14.4 so i honestly believe i can get a repeatable 14 flat and 5.6 to sixty with a decent run and a couple more modifications.

Cheers keith ! that would be great, it would give me an idea of what to expect  :happy2:

On my vRS i was stage 2+ on the ko3 turbo. Done the ko4 stage 3 conversion based on the stage2+ ED 30. The difference is quite a lot,  hugely faster compared to ko3 stage2+. It felt "sedate" in comparison...
