Any stipulations?  Similar size to the ED30, reasonable economy, <Xk miles, <X number of years, etc.?

Are you a fan of Fords?  A few Focus STs now around that price range.  Very reliable engine and they make a fantastic noise.  They are thirsty though and not as attractive as some of the others you've mentioned but a lot of car for the money.  Very tunable as well like the ED30 so you can really pump up the performance.

Like the MK4 R32 idea but are they now high mileage in that price range? Could be expensive???

Good luck with the search.

I changed a DSG Edition 30 to a Z4M .... and now to a 320d auto !!

Am I pleased - yes.  Am I disappointed by the driving experience - no !

Have I remapped it - not yet, I don't feel it necessary to spoil the economy and low costs.

My 320d auto is a 177ps model which you won't get for the money but a 163ps model may be OK ?

I have the M sport suspension which makes it handle well ... and I don't find the run flats too much of an issue.

Sometimes less is more - in that you can use the power more often rather than having to back off all the time.

Don't rule out a 320d or a 120d .... they are surprisingly good if you can put up with a diesel .... they are also incredibly smooth compared to the VAG diesels ....

i agree, we tune a massive amount of the new(er) generation 163 and 177bhp engines ans the results are great.

My brother in-law has the 177 320d, with a lot of work on the map and lots of dyno time it achieved an extra 54bhp and 67 ft/lb. It also gained an additional 4mpg over a long term economy test. (now averages 52mpg)
