Thanks for all the replies, however I've decided to call it a day and sort it when I come back as I've got to be up early. Don't want to risk taking it driving on the M'way with bonnet popped and unattended in airport car park.

I'll take the wifes car tommorrow and she can use the Golf if it rains (she walks if its not), and her trip (school run) is only 0.5 mile each way.

Thanks for the Thank You, Rob - Always appreciated  :drinking:

Just an added note: It's academic but my VW dealer said the problem is usually due to corrosion - Probably road salts etc. Keeping it lubed will help but lubing your hood mech is not something you'd necessarily think of doing. He also said they'd had about 5 cases of this problem in the last 18 months and kept a bonnet lock in stock. He knew what I was talking about as soon as I mentioned my problem.

One thing you might have to do is disconnect the bonnet catch sensor if your leaving it to stop the alarm going off. Its on the drivers side next to the headlight. just an electrical plug. No pics sorry.

I used "my bonnet won't close" as an excuse to fit AeroCatches. Any excuse, eh  :rolleye:

However, an unsecure carbon bonnet is a bit of a worry [said he, looking for even more justification].

Update - The problems is not sorted and I didn't use my car for obvious reasons and am returning home today.

Has anyone got any info on a fix i.e. how much is a new mech, how long/how much does a dealer take/charge to fit and is a DIY install possible. Just asking these Q's as a back up as I've got the car booked in with the dealer who claimed to fix this problem under warranty back in Feb this year. The warranty has since expired but I am hoping they can sort this out as there may be years warranty on all parts and labour. In fact I'm gonna phone VW Cust Services and find out.

In April this year my friendly VW dealer charged me £20.14 for the replacement lock (1K1823509E) plus £25.50 for labour = £45.64 excl vat.

HTH,
Robin

So judging by that it seems that the job may take 15 or so mins by a pro (based on most dealers not charge £100 an hour). So maybe I could do it in an hour, I'll investigate tommorrow in the daylight now I'm not in a rush as I was Sunday night. :happy2:

ALL SORTED.

I took out the mechanism last night and right enough it was seized. So headed off to my pre-booked appointment with the stealers where they confirmed it. They tried to charge me the parts and as a goodwill gesture the labour was free. Although in the end I didn't pay for the parts either as when I was in earlier in the year when covered by warranty I had a new pull handle fitted because there was a lot of play. This didnt solve the problem but the new mech did. I therefore claimed that they fitted the incorrect parts when covered by warranty and had it all done FOC.  :happy2:

Thats about the rate charged in Aberdeen when you add the VAT  :sad1:

Their fixed price items like servicing, brake pads etc are competitive but as soon as they working on the clock the estimates I've had from there are eye watering...
