Failed Attempt to FW-2760 Upgrade (RNS-510)
« on: November 01, 2010, 01:15:46 pm »
Well chaps... Oopss is my first reaction.
I attempted to update to 2760 firmware on my RNS-510. I've no idea which spec/grade it is tbh but I'll check next time I open the dash up. I *think* it's probably a grade C.

Tried the update last night. All was going well up to 30% - this was the screen prior to the error reproducing;

This was the actual error -

Oh dear. That to me suggests that my unit doesn't support that version of firmware or perhaps the DVD I was writing from was a problem? Corrupt or half written file perhaps?

Not sure, but I'd love to pick everyone's brains.
What's it currently do when I turn it on? Well, I get the system is unable to startup - please insert SW disc, so at the moment it's totally out of action

All I'm looking to do is get it active again, don't mind which firmware version, don't mind losing anything on the hard drive  :happy2:
Even if I put the factory release version back on, if possible, that would do me fine? If that's a feasible solution, I'll download it this afternoon and try and run it from that.

Beer tokens for anyone with some sound pointers

Thanks.
Pete

Press & hold setup mic & eject at the same time and the unit will power back on.

I'll get you a link for a different firmware.

EDIT- Here you go 2720 Link

Topman  :happy2:

Running the 2720 upgrade as we speak now that I'm home. Hopefully that puts it all back to normal, then I might leave it forever and just live with the Regensburg issue  :indifferent:

I was running 272X on mine and the regensburg would clear within about 2-5 secs so you should be ok.

Fingers crossed it works :happy2:

Carlos, you the man  :happy2:
It demanded the Nav DVD on clicking Nav -> shall I hit it with the 6.1 maps DVD?

Thanks again fella, got a result here. I think I practically had a broken RNS for 24 hours

Glad it's all sorted.

New problem with the Maps DVD. I didn't think it was going to be quite that easy   :sad1:

Clicked Nav > RNS demanded the Nav CD > Put it the 6.1 jobby > It restarted (took ages, about a minute to restart) then presented me with this:

I'm assuming my unit can't support FW later than 272x and maps later than 5.x?

I'm about to try the OEM maps 5.0 DVD so I've got maps of some sort at least to run the nav with :happy2:

Turds. Even worse, it spat the OEM 5.0 maps DVD out 5 times. Prompted me to insert the navigation DVD again, read it for 10 seconds, then spat it out and prompted again for the right DVD x5.

Hmm. What's that mean?

Have your discs been burnt correctly (good quality media, slowest burn speed possible)?

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Yup. Got two different discs from two different experienced members on the forum  :happy2: I wouldn't suspect at this stage that the source is the problem. Fairly sure its my bloody unit, as the below suggests.

Massive problems now - Tried entering the 6.1 W/Eur maps CD when prompted and received this error after it rebooted itself and did a bit more work:

I'm now greeted with this on powering on (can't get rid of the loop it's in):

Next, it progresses to this screen:

Then, this!   :sad1:

What the absolute truffle?

Help guys  :ashamed:  :signLOL:

**BTW I've got VCDS, is this gonna help at this stage?

Thanks
Pete.

In absolute dire straights with this guys. Can I force a 'factory reset' at all? Clearly it  cant load any images so it seems I've chuffed it quite seriously?  :sad1:

I've had that screen before,   what f/w is on top of the unit, if its 1100 or lower then your best off getting a something like f/w 1300, also try going into vcds and activating adaptation 50  you can still do this while the unit is in this state.

Once that is done try holding the setup button while you press the on button, to try and get into the test menu, IF you can get into there go to the bottom and select the allow firmware downgrade,

If you cannot do the above try holding the setup mic and eject then place the new firmware disc in and see if it will do the update again with an older f/w disc.

Pete.

Here is a link to 1300 firmware 1300 Clicky

Only difference is it doesn't have facility for voice control. Otherwise pretty much the same.

If you get a downgrade error. Insert the disc, Press Setup, Mic & Eject and it should force the update.

Just incase your doing the process wrong this is how to do it.

1. Get in Car - Do not put key in ignition
2. Power up the RNS-510 without key in ignition
3. Insert your Firmware CD
4. Unit will restart and after a couple of minutes it will ask you to press OK - wait a couple more minutes and you will get another OK to press.
5. Leave the update to run for 50 minutes or so. Once it’s done eject the CD and reload maps from DVD.

HTH

Let me know how you get on :happy2:

Darren + Carl, kind gents  :drinking:

I've given up for today as I've fallen out of love with the RNS
I'll try both suggestions tomorrow- cheers  :happy2:

My only concern is that all barring the Nav/Maps was working yesterday until I tried the maps again this lunchtime. It consistently kept ejecting the Maps DVD (after prompting for it) but on around genuinely the 25th attempt, it worked but then reproduced the conditions in my last two posts.

Is it right that the Map update process will have broken the Firmware? Surely that would mean I could find myself back in this loop again with the software error if so?  :chicken:

Thanks.
Pete
