My first polished detail
« on: February 15, 2009, 12:26:03 pm »
Having never polished a car and in dire need of a distraction from exams, I decided to give the car a decent detail. It wasn't my best but despite starting at 9am, I still didn't have enough daylight to do it all properly, so I did the best I could. Had to miss out a few things that I'm hoping to get done today (mainly just rubber trim and exhaust).

What I did:

- a few good soaks of water (after defrosting the bloody car!)
- Megs APC 1:4 dilution to get rid of LSP, all over the car! Rinsed
- Megs Hot Rims on the wheels + wheel brush, followed by MF finger scrubbing for those corners. Rinsed.
- 2BM + Dodo Juice BTBM, wash and rinse twice. Separate mitt for lower parts.
- Dab dry with towels (I can't get hang of this pat-dry thing).
- clayed with sonus green clay. Didn't find it aggressive enough over some areas but tried my best.
- Polished with Menzerna Final Finish Polish P085RD. Took me about three hours!
- IPA wipedown
- Lime prime lite all over paintwork
- glass - AG fast glass + glass polish. Again had to rush this stage because of time.
- Collinite 476s, one coat (again time was a huge factor).

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

When you spend too much time on detailing world, you'll be the same!

Megs APC Meguairs All-Purpose Cleaner clicky use diluted down to 1:4 or 1:10 for degreasing
LSP Last stage product. Literally the last thing you apply to the paintwork. In my case, wax. I wanted to get rid of the previous wax.
MF finger scrubbing Not kinky. Used a microfibre cloth and wrapped it around my finger so I could get into the nooks and crannies of the alloys.
2BM - Two bucket method - a way of washing the car. One bucket full of clean water, one bucket full of shampoo water. Place mitt in clean water, rinse, place in soapy water and wash one panel of car. Rinse mitt out in clean water before using soapy water again for next panel
Dodo Juice BTBM Dodo Juice Born To Be Mild Shampoo clicky designed to be less harsh on paintwork

HTH (hope that helps)  :P :P :P

No problem :happy2:
If you're ever bored or have difficulty getting to sleep, have a look over at detailing world. In fact, I'd better post there too.

Yeah I'm a member and have a look through every now and then. Believe it or not, I am also a keen detailing fan and adopt pretty much the same approach that you have done with your car - just with slightly different products! I'm just not as clued up on lingo hahaha  :embarrassed: :embarrassed:

Looking great Stealth.

I love the flake on the MK5 paintwork. Beautiful
No PAS. No ESP. No DSC. No TCS. No ABS. Just my right foot between me and oblivion. Oh - And a seatbelt.
