Milltek resonated exhaust
« on: February 16, 2009, 04:23:22 pm »
Thinking of getting an exhaust for my mk5 GTI, wanted peoples opinions/reviews on the milltek cat back exhaust (resonated) as awesome gti have got them at a good price at the mo. Is it much louder than standard? and does it make a droning sound which is audible inside the car which would be annoying after a while? or do i go the the non resonated and let people know im about?
any help appreciated

This one.....

Even the Miltek NoN resonated does not drone !

I would avoid the resonated and go for the Non resonated , it sounds way better and is not chav in the slightest, sounds like a proper exhaust should, ie stock sound when pootling along but sounds like a beast under load

I don't think you'll be able to tell the difference with the resonated. But if that's what you want then go for it  :happy2:

hhmmm, well sounds like the non res would be fine then!! and awesome have got it for £341.01 with free delivery!!
I have got a pit at work i could park the car over and im quite handy with a spanner, are they relatively simple to fit, does the milltek use the same hangers and other fittings as the standard exhaust?

Should do, but i think VW weld the centre pipe to the backbox ?

Im not sure so dn't qoute me but my Edition 30 backbox was welded to the centre pipe ?

Non Res is definatly the way forward , did you try Emailing Milltek personally for there price + fitting ?

i have got the resonated one with the full turbo back downpipe and the noise is all good, especially when you boot it which is when you want it to sound meaty!

a few people have swapped there non-res for res due to noise issues and boomy/droning sounds when on motorways

others have done the exact opposite as the res was not loud enough

each to their own,

you going for just the cat back or are you thinking turbo back as well?

GTI Edition 30 - Reflex Silver now gone but not forgotten - Cooper S JCW now.

As James says, it's very much down to personal likes/dislikes - sound is very subjective and we all have slightly different ranges of hearing anyway (not a lot of people know that).

You can easily swap around the centre Res and Non-Res sections (at extra cost of course) if you want it quieter/louder.

Milltek zorsts mature as they coke up and you probably will experience some 'drone' at about 3,200 revs but it will pass.

VAG have a reputation for very tightly fixing and so be prepared! One of my fixings had to be drilled out!

If you are likely to remap in the future then get a Turbo-back (aka Hi-flow+Downpipe), otherwise you won't exploit the remap and vica-versa.

will have to have a look at how it all fastens together then before i go to far, not keen on letting many of the garages round my area do it as have got some right monkeys!! like to see for myself how it all goes together if you know what i mean!
I was only looking at the cat back as wasnt thinking of having a remap, maybe an induction system of some description and thats about it, which opens up another can of worms.... carbonio, APR ,Dbilas, neuspeed, the list is endless!!

On thread, but just another thought.  My complete Non res,  (also supplied with a cracked Centre box, that I will be able to repair............) Is due to arrive tomorrow.

Do you have to cut the old exhaust to remove it?  On my old Golf MK4, I had to cut the Std exhaust between the two boxes to remove it.

Any thoughts?

There's a vid on youtube about milltek res v nonres. Originally, I was thinking about a res but once I saw that vid, I'm swung over to non-res. Need to hear them both fitted to a mk5 from the inside to the outside to appreciate the differences.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.
