Activity Monitor isn't showing anything obvious. Looks I'm about 15 pages into the Apple Support Discussions and i'm beginning to loose the will to live!
Should have bought a windows laptop

Lets not go down the Mac V Pc road as we know Mac's are far better  :happy2:

Macs are PCs - they are personal computers. The hardware your Mac runs on is identical to the hardware on a nicely spec'd Windows machine. I think you mean "Mac V Windows".

And no, they're not.

/obvious troll is obvious?

//also, to be somewhat helpful and not make you entirely disgusted with me, similar issues on my mum's iMac resulted in eventual hdd failure. Back up everything NOW if you haven't already, and buy a replacement hdd to fit in there sooner rather than later. Avoid moving hundreds of files at once - this is what caused hers to eventually fall over. Recommend you back up files incrementally over a course of day in small batches, starting with the most important files first.

///Remember kids, HEAT results in hdd death. In a laptop resting on a duvet or a pillow or a cushion, the problem is magnified.

Completely agree. I maintain a regular housekeeping routine for all the computers (used as a generic term) in our house, both the Macbook and iMac use WD Passport 500gb external hard drives as back ups on a 72 hour cycle and the media server which is also used to backup my 100GB+ of photos is on a Rad 1 configuration. I also back up the photos on a 500gb external Hard drive. Overkill i know but once bitten!

I tend to use the Macbook on a table on in conjunction with a lapcooler cooler when slouching on the sofa so the rear heat vent is never obstructed

Ant.... does it run the same on a guest account?

A new install with "archive and install" wouldnt hurt!

Rich,

Tried a guest account and it does run a little quicker so I am assuming the issue is software related and not Hardware.

What software have you got running at startup?

Connect360Helper - streams content from itunes to Xbox over a home network
iAntiVirus - This has been removed as it was killing my CPU usage which is apparently a known issue

VRS Carl pointed me in the direction of Onyx which i have been using over the past couple of days. I have repaired the hard drive permissions a couple of times and it has made it more stable but the overall performance is a lot less than it was 6 months ago.

Have you used it properly.

This is what you should have ticked

Make sure you have this version aswell

It will prob start up and run slightly slower for the first couple of days but then it "should" get noticeably quicker.

I also recommend a program called "Clean My Mac" you will be surprised at the amount of crap you get rid of. Even on a Mac!!
