I wouldn't worry too much about the IS, I have the non IS version and love it.

It's just for extra flexibility, while still learning. I have a 50 f 1.4 non IS and although it's fast i nearly always have to use it wide open when not on a tripod or bump up the ISO.  :happy2:

Just to point out that the lens-specific flickr groups are a great resource for lens lusting choosing. Do you need zoom? My favourite Canon lens is the 100mm macro. It's a lovely portrait lens.

I have the f/1.8mm Nifty Fifty and for the money it is one hell of a lens.
