RNS 310 Need VAg-Com or New Canbus?
« on: December 22, 2010, 09:50:28 am »
Bought an RNS 310 a few days ago simply because I can't find the funds for an RNS 510 so close to xmas.

Anyway it should be here tomorrow or Friday and i was wondering if the 310 still gives battery drainage issues? I have an 05 plate GT so have the feeling I will have an issue! Secondly will this need VAG-Com'ing for the Sat nav or anything else to work?

Hi Betty,

I'm sure the 310 suffers from the same symptoms as the 510.

And yes it will still need coding if you want directions in the highline ( if you have one ) and steering controls to work properly.

Will it work without coding? As I don't mind not having directions on the headline screen that's no real problem for now.

Fingers cross I have no problems, how do I check if I will or not? Check my cannabis part number?

If you have an early car then your can gateway will need updating to stop the drain, the only way to check the part number is to scan with VCDS but like I said an early car will need upgrading.

Im sure you could run modified f/w on the unit to stop the drain but you'd have to check with someone like vrs carl or mortygttdi to be certain you can use the 510 f/w on the 310.

As the RNS310 is relatively new I would be highly surprised if you can run RNS510 Firmware on it. For a start there is no HDD on the 310 which is updated with the firmware and they are made by 2 diff companies (RNS310 Blaupunkt and RNS510 VDO Continental)

The 310 will plug and play but it will all just work from the unit. For Nav Instructions on Highline & Steering Controls etc it will need coding with VCDS.

You can get a new Can Gateway for around £85 off fleabay. Or about £130ish from a Dealer. This will be the only way to stop Battery Drain until more of these units become available and people start acquiring the Firmware to modify.

Betty02...a quick question to which  I have looked in other threads but cant find the answer. i have a 2005 GTI and want to switch from the RCD300 to the 310 like you have done.....does this interconnect ok with the 6 disc cd changer? I think you mentioned that you didnt get the dreaded battery drainage issues but did you need to go to VW to get it reprogrammed for the steering wheel controls? Many thanks for any help, regards from sunny Spain, the dieseljunior :happy2:

thedieseljunior  - I didn't have the 6CD changer in my car just the iPod dock in my armrest, but these use the same cable and the same interface so I am 100% guaranteed that it will work spot on with that!

In regards to the steering controls if you have some already and they work then you may get lucky and it may just work! I need to get a MK6 GTi wheels and controls and module before I test it any further.

Hope this helps!

Thanks that's great.....if worst comes to the worst and I put the unit in and lose the controls on the steering wheel they (vw) can re programme them back on I presume? Maybe they will do it for a special rate as they have just hit me for €175 for the header hose for my corrado

Did you get this then and work ok? Mine is 2005 GTI with CD changer. Thinking of treating myself to one at Xmas!
