knocking noise

hi guys,
 when the car is ticking over, im getting an extra loud ticking noise,
 i know our cars generally have a tickety sound as normal !
 But when i apply the clutch, it seems to fade, but comes back when the clutch is let out...

Any ides guys?

The only thing that could cause it to go quite is the flywheel as it's dualmass it causes a knocking noise but if it's a squeak as such it's the release bearing (more likely) as the flywheel would be a noticeable what's wrong with my car if it was on it's way out!!!

Sounds like it could be one of the engine belts. Are you due a cambelt change?

Its seems to be more tappity, rather than a squeakin noise.
i only need to apply a small amount of presure to the clutch , for the noise to fade. it then sounds normal.

i had upgraded my subframe & engine mounts to TSR's, but the sound was there before hand...                   
it is well serviced & looked after... 
Ive had the mechanic check over my timing belt, to see about renewal, he give me the ok, its said to be in good condition.
No point in replacing it yet, if its ok..  :happy2:

But what other belts or chains is there?
Cam chain ?
Tensioner?
Would it help to identify the problem, if the noise was better heard inside, but on the outside more to the passenger side of the engine?

The noise is idle gearbox chatter.  Usually only caused by fitting a lightweight flywheel, but this is also a sign that the dual mass flywheel is in its way out.  DSG cars suffer from fooked flywheels more than manuals.  My old dual mass caused the gearbox chatter more than my lightweight flywheel did.

I'd be more inclined to say it was something transmission related as if it can come and go with clutch pressure then it wont have any effect on the engine. My dads van is the only thing I can use as a example here but his makes like a clicking tapping noise and when the clutch is applied it goes away now it's down to the input shaft spinning inside the box and there is probable some slap in it some where and when you apply the clutch the shaft stops spinning hence why the noise stops. I wouldn't worry about it if it's that.

There is a cam chain on the opposite side of the engine to the timeing belt whitch can cause a diesel engine type noise and it's down to the chain being slack and tapping against parts inside the housing. But this would be there no matter what you were pressing so it sort of rules that out. Hope this helps  :smiley:

Does this ultimately mean that there's an issue with the DMF and its on its way out or could it be aligned to anything else? Mine's been slightly chattery (only marginally mind) ever since I've had the DMF and clutch replaced under warranty about 15K ago.

Thanks very gratefull for all the help

TrickGTI when you say about input shaft spining inside the box and probably some slap in it,  what is slap, like oil or grease?
Would there be a cure for this or away to test or check-out the possibilitys of this,
gearbox oil renewal?
I know replacing the engine mounts, can make noise more noticeable in the engine bay, maybe it has just become more noticeable from then...
With less movement, would this cause anythig to act this way ?

Sorry ha I think that's my Yorkshire comeing through by slap I mean slack but it's only down to the shaft haveing no pressure on it In the idle state. The engine mount would exaggerate this noise into the car and so this is probably what you are experiencing so Without hearing it for myself I wouldn't worry about it. Most manual cars will make the noise to a certain extent but 99% of the time you can't hear it :happy2:

The flywheel noise you would generally get a chatter on engine turn off and a slight judder through the clutch pedal !!

You have to jack up the drivers side and don't forget the axel stand then remove the liner and locate the fuel pipe, then fit some bubble wrap around the pipe and this will sort things. Just like a new car....Job done

With doing that, does it explain that when the clutch is applied the noise reduces, or is this something that is placed near the clutch???

It's from a post back in 2006. I'm not saying that this will sort things but the rattle picks up things like clutches etc, so it's worth a try and will cost you nothing but 30mins time on Saturday morning.

See how you go, but let me know the result.

It worked for me and it was like driving a new car again.

I’ve now come to the conclusion that the problem is the clutch,  :surprised:
When driving about, say you drive threw a 40 mph speed limit, into a 30 mph.
So you lift your foot of the pedal and let the car reduce speed, you maybe drop just below 30 mph still in 6th gear.   :driver:
You then reapply a little accelaratiation to reach the 30 mph and the car then starts a lite squealing / squeaking noise...

Would that explain the extra ticking noise being the clutch, if so at this point how much is left in it?
