Just wondering what the real world mpg for town / out of town figures are for the 140bhp  TDI engine.  There is an idea in my head for a A3 140 TDI Black Edition and while the official figures look good, there are a lot of people saying this engine doesn't have the same feel or mpg of the old 1.9 TDI lumps?  It would be the newer common rail unit.

I do about 40-60 miles a day, half is countryside and half is town driving, I don't drive like a grandma but still get around 42-45mpg.

In my 2.0tdi 140pd I was getting around 25-30mpg to and from work in town driving stop start so to speak In my GTi I get 25
But on a run I was getting around 45mpg. The newer CR engines are more efficient again from my experiance I was getting on average 5mpg more in a A3 2.0TDI CR than the old PD engine.


The CR engine doesnt feel as quick as the PD engine but imo thats down to the lack of turbo lag and the much smoother engine.

All depends what your going to be using it for mate.
If like me its 4miles to work in stop start traffic then the whole diesel thing is pants unless you wanna drive like a gran As like I said im getting the same MPG out of my Remapped GTi

But if your commuting a fair bit more than that involving long stretches dual carrigeways etc then you will get more MPG out of a diesel.

The way I worked it out was I get the same MPG out of my GTi going to and from work and general driving but less when it comes to long stretches but the bigger smile on face in the GTi makes up for the lack of pennies in my pocket.

Unless your doing more than 15Kish a year your better off in a petrol imo.

I've had 2 1.9tdi's (mk4 golf 130 and A3 MK1 130 TDI quattro). Both got more than my two 140pd lump cars (MK5 2.0GTTDI DSG and A3 2.0TDI Sport DSG). All 4 were remapped and I got better mpg out of them after they were mapped. The best out of the lot for MPG was the Golf MK4 as I got 61mpg on motorway runs after it was mapped. The best I got out of the 2.0TDI PD lumps was 53mpg on a Motorway run, but around town I average 30-35mpg.

i think vRScarl has an octavia PD140.  Hes now remapped and running about 170hp iirc he'd no doubt be able to inform you of what it makes.

I'm in the perfect position to answer your question. My brother just got a black edition and I've driven it a fair bit. The engine is very quiet, not petrol quiet but yonks ahead of the PD engines.

Just driving yesterday with a friend and putting my foot down quite a bit returned 33mpg over about 8 miles. The car looks phenomenal, so many stares. The manual gearbox is very easy and the car itself is very easy to drive and the flat bottom wheel is  .

But I did say that it would be so much nicer if it was a petrol because you put your foot down in 3rd (1st and 2nd are a bit pointless) and it goes nicely with a big push of torque but then it runs out of puff quickly and then onto 4th etc. But if economy is a what you want then it's a very good engine.

Thanks all for the input.  TBH I was expecting a bit better economy based on the official consumption figures and my experience of driving my folks 1.9 TDI passat.  I had heard the new engines weren't as good as the 1.9 and the above experience seems to confirm.

My driving is a 7 mile commute each way 50:50 town / dual carriageway.  I knew this was never the ideal run to get diesel mpg but based on the above it sounds like I might be getting the same mpg (25-30).  Only benefit would be cheaper tax / insurance and in the grand scheme of things its probably not that different.

in my pd140 jetta, im averaging around 38/42 around town and 53/64 on my 28 mile commute to work. ive found it to be about 3-4mpg better than my old 130pd bora
