VW took my car for an MOT and returned it back to me. I have just been out to start it but it cuts out after one second. There is also no power to the instrument cluster. Is that the immobiliser? What have they done to it? Any ideas on how to fix it.

Im not best pleased! I will be calling them tomorrow!

It's not the immobiliser as the car starts.

Only thing I can suggest is to get it vcds scanned if the garage won't help.
Without traction power is nothing!

Its the Immobiliser has the clocks are not connected the ECU is not able to check the clocks or key for the right Immob pin sequence so although it starts it will shut down straight away.

Check the fuse ollie, I'm not sure which one it is but there is a fuse for the dash cluster?

My guess is the fuse for the cluster. The immobiliser is built into the cluster so that has no power too. If the ecu does not get the ok from the immobiliser it will cut out after a second.

EDIT: Darren beat me to it

Yes its definately the cluster fuse. Its a 20 amp in the fuse box in the engine bay.

Not sure on the number though, had to change one at the weekend when fitting newbie Phils highline as it blew when i dropped the steering column and trapped the live feed to a badly installed hands free kit  :fighting:

Apparently its a 5A fuse in position F17 engine bay side for the Instrument Cluster Control Module according to ELSA.

That's the beauty of VW.

The manual didn't even list the fuse for the cluster in any location! I had to pull each one out in turn to find it  :stupid:

It's a nightmare mate.

I had fun when I fitted my heated seats, the factory locations for the heated seats were taken up already with other stuff.

I'm sure they make it up as they go along  :rolleye:
