I need a new HPFP (and quick) - any advice?
« on: March 27, 2011, 01:43:50 pm »
Hey guys,

My '06 GTI hasn't been driving great the past week or so. I was getting a bad lag once I reached 100km/ph. Then over the last two days it really started driving like a dog. Really bad misfiring from early on, not just at the high end.

Brought it to my mechanic on Thurs night and he ran a diag. It returned the code P0087. Fuel rail / system pressure too low. He took it off me Fri night and rang me yesterday to say that I need a new High Pressure Fuel Pump. Any suggestions as to where I should order one of these from? The car is stock as it is, and I don't have too many plans for upgrading it in the near future. I do a lot of driving with work so the sooner I get my hands on one the better.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated guys!

Have you checked other things first such as cam follower and sensor.

Me personally no, I'm just going on what the mechanic has told me.

I did a small bit of searching and it seems that the cam/sensor/follower are made from softer compounds than the pump apparently (correct me if I am wrong). Would this mean they would typically wear quicker than the pump. Is it possible for them to be ok and the pump to be damaged?

Unlikely as the pump is damaged after the follower has been punched thru. The pump's plunger then rides "unprotected" on the cam lobe damaging it.

Therefore you must ask your mechanic if he removed the hpfp to physically check on the condition of the cam lobe and its follower.

If you do need a new hpfp I would recommend sending yours to PDT and getting the Autotech internals upgrade. I found them to be extremely professional throughout and I was more than pleased with the results.

Ok I'll ring and ask him if he has checked the cam lobe/follower. Any recommendations as to where I could source all of these parts online? I'm based in Limerick (Ireland), so I won't be able to bring it to any UK location (assuming that PDT is in the UK).

I've got a spare HPFP if your after one. I had a lowish torque figure after my PDT remap, PDT said it might be my HPFP , I put a new one on, and it made 5bhp less with the brand new pump on. I'll sell it for £40 delivered if youre interested. Its around £170 new from the dealers, could have it  posted tomorrow for you?
It would also be worth fitting a new cam follower while the pump is off aswell :happy2:

Just spoke with the mechanic. He will be checking cam lobe and follower in the morning. HeavyD, I may very well take you up on that offer! Is it in good condition? What kind of miles were put on it before you took it off? If I do go with your good self I might ask for a photo if possible.

I reckon I'll definitely be looking at a new cam follower alright, which isn't an expensive part. Fingers crossed the lobe isn't damaged!

Quick question regarding all of this work: My timing belt is due for change soon too. Would I be better off doing all of this in one quick, but very painful process? Or hold off another 6-8 months or so and do the belt then?

It had done 36k.
I had it on ebay the other week, so its still all wrapped up. it was this one

Up to you mate, it worked, It made better power than the new pump. I just wasted money on a new pump for no reason. Its a half hour job to swap over, and doent interfere with the timing belt, so I wouldnt bother changing that yet if I were you
New pump

old pump

That looks in good nick in fairness. I'm gonna wait until I speak with my mechanic again tomorrow after he fully diagnoses it. Decent chance I'll order it off you tomorrow night though. I'll keep you posted. Cheers.

Also as your car is an 06, did it have a recall for the low fuel pressure sensor?

Not to my knowledge. I only own it since Feb 2010. It has full VWSH alright but no mention of recall in the logbook. If I had to guess, it probably was not recalled. Would this be something else I should look into replacing?

Just looking through the cam follower options seeing as I will most likely need a new one, do you guys reckon I should by something other than the OEM VW one? Something along these lines....http://kmdtuning.com/?_a=viewProd&productId=1426

Apparently 20k longer life span.

Any good UK/Euro sites to order from? Majority of the ones that are popping up for me are US based. I'm in need of this asap so the closer to home the better.
