Have you considered the Leon Cupra?

Same engine, chassis and tuning potential as the Ed30, but with better brakes, better looks (IMO) and alot cheaper second hand.  Interior is a bit suspect though.

R32 will be slow compared to a 300hp turbocharged car and would take some getting used to, and they arent tunable unless you throw silly money at them

If you're trying to save up for a deposit, surely the best course of action would be to sell the VXR, find yourself a decent-ish GTI (if it must be a GTI - a mapped TDI would nearly be as quick and much cheaper to run), save as much as you can from the sale of the Astra and be content with something 'fairly' quick for the interim. The sooner you get the house, the sooner you can stop saving and buy something decent again. Just a thought.
Only 250.1bhp - but with that noise, who cares?
