Anti Virus?
« on: May 08, 2011, 11:16:34 pm »
Got my eldest daughter a Dell laptop recently (thanks Stu) and before I let her loose on it I'd like to install some decent security.

Now in the past I had a Dell PC and just made do with the free AVG software but found this a bit inept. Can anyone recommend anything better, preferably free but will go and buy something if it will work!  :happy2:

I use freeware:

ZoneAlarm firewall
Avast antivirus
Spywarewareblaster, Spybot, ad-aware and a-squared for antimalware

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

I always recommend Avast AntiVirus - one of the best free ones out there.

Added to that, for spyware etc, I used to use SpyBot and Windows Defender.

Another Kasperspy user here, used it for the last 3 years and nothing gets past it...plus I paid short of a tenner this year off of eBay, used the activation code in my existing anti virus and now have another 12 months :happy2:

Came in a sealed box from a reputable Ebay seller

Kaspersky is a good paid product, can be too harsh on not high spec'd machines but the settings can be toned down. It is good however I still clean clients machines from malware as it doesn't really stop everything, granted nothing can.

A good combo for free would be using Microsoft Security Essentials, Malwarebytes Antimalware and Spybot search and destroy.

If you want to pay for a product, go with Kaspersky instead of MSE :)

Norton AV 2011 for me.  Went from Norton 360 to this as natural progression.  Really easy to use and seems to work unobtrusively.

had all the free ones (AVG, kap etc) and happy with Norton.

Use it in conjuction with Windows defender.
