Engine Oil Temp Sensor Fault

Hi all have my first issue with the car The car is a 2007 Ed30 DSG with just under 15k on it.

The following fault will clear but will come back after about 10 seconds of ignition on:

If I look at the oil temp in measuring blocks, it always reads -60C. My understanding is that the oil temp is measured by the oil level sensor in the sump. Is this correct? When I look at oil level in measuring blocks its blank except for the level will flash up as 0 for a fraction of a second every 5 to 10 seconds.

I unplugged the sensor today and cleared the fault. After 10 seconds I got the same fault code.

There are no scrapes whatsoever on the sump or the sensor itself. The 3 wires going into the plug are secure and there is no corroding on the terminals.

Could it be anything else before I replace the sensor? Any comments/opinions welcome

Is there no light on the display telling you to top up your oil?  Maybe the ECU is smart enough to see that the sensor is broken and ignores what the sensor is saying ...

No that's the strange thing. There is no fault about the oil level sensor or light on the dash. I'm going to order a new sensor in the morning and have it fitted when the car is serviced.

did you get the oil temp sensor sorted?  I dont get an error code but I get -60 on my oil temp and no oil level form my car, I dont get an error code on mine as I dont think mine had it from factory but I have been wondering if it can be retro fitted is the sensor and wiring obvious if you get under the car and look at the sump?

I had the dealer check it at the last service. They said the sensor is dead. They told me they had one but when they went to fit it, it turned out to be the wrong sensor. Ill have it changed during the next oil change. They said they are a common failure.

If you look at the sump Rich, you will be able to see if you have it.

Cheers Kevin,  Will have a look under the car think I have managed to find a google image of one (looks odd) as you have one which is working then you will be getting the oil temp from it on the Polar unit (its what im trying to diagnose with mine as I get no reading) Im guessing retro would be expensive as you need a new sump

Just to close this up the fault was caused by me fitting Highline clocks from a US spec car that didnt have the sensor fitted.

I fixed it by changing channel 39 in adaptions for the cluster from 0 to 1.

Same issue I had but with no error in the ECU! ha ha
