Edition 30 Leather Seat Wear
« on: May 15, 2011, 01:22:35 pm »
I'm sure this may have been discussed before but my drivers seat bolster has started to wear (most of damage done before I purchased the car 10 months ago!) and I'm looking to get this repaired.

I treat the leather every few weeks with Autoglym leather care and always careful when getting in and out of car.

All other areas in car are wearing well and look brand new for a 4 year old car.

Any suggestions or recommendations on leather repairers in Hertfordshire area that could help and avoid replacing the bolster/seat in future?

1. Don't bother with any leather care on ED30 seats. VW leather is coated in plastic so all that happens is the leather treatment sits on top of the plastic. It won't be absorbed into the leather underneath. Better to use a dilute all-purpose cleaner and clean the "leather" instead.

2. Alex did a how to guide on using some stuff to repair the bolsters so they didn't need replacing. I'm sure it'll crop up if you search for it.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Thanks for the info.

Wasn't aware of the coating on the seats, is this just on the ED30's or all VW's do you know?

Had a look for the bolster repair article but can't find it so far.....will keep searching.

All VWs now have PU coated leather to help prevent wear and sagging

The seats are quite easy to repair. You mix the leather repair kit 'dye' to suit the seat then apply 3-4 coats for a natural finish. Its permanent and hard wearing

Have a look in my progress thread in 'Member Rides'  :happy2:

Just checked out your thread, the repair looks great and going to order the kit and give it a go.

Your ED30 looks awesome mate, impressed with the mods, unfortunately I'm not brave enough to attempt most!! am looking to get some carbon wrapping on my front spoiler and rear diffuser but after seeing your grill mod might get that done too now but probably use company Carbon Skin to carry out that work as don't want to mess it up!!

Thanks again for the advice  :happy2:
