Buying an Edition 30 with 'High Mileage'
« on: May 18, 2011, 07:12:32 am »
Hi all, as some of you know I'm on the hunt for an Edition 30. One has come up at the right colour and spec, the only problem is, is that the mileage is 56,000. Owning and enjoying the car with this mileage isn't a problem to me, but seeing as I put around 10k a year onto my cars, I'm worried to what 56,000 will soon develop to.

The car is a 2008 08 reg.

What are peoples opinions on this?

Thanks

Prefer a higher miler personally, as long as it's service shedule has been carried out by a vw approved dealer.
A car sat around doing nothing will deteriorate if not worse.

It's had maintenance rather then scant servicing for a 3 year old car.

Other thing to consider, is whether the cam belt has been changed.Maybe if it's a dealer sale car, you could ask this to be done, which will save you a HUGE chunk of dollar come next service time.

What's the average per annum these days 12k?

The car is 3 years old, so it's not hugely high really is it?

50k or 20k Service history essential but also consider how long you'll keep her and what mileage will be at the you sell.

Wouldnt worry me as long as it has the service history as others have said. I bought mine at 45k and its now on 61k miles and ive not had a problem with it. Fanastic motor.

Mine had 60k when I bought it back in January, and the majority (over 40k) is motorway mileage as the guy used to go from Yeovil to Newbury 3 times a week

Full VWSH and runs like a dream. As steve says, Id rather have a car that had done 60k of mainly motorway miles than 30k of plodding around towns.

I bought my 07 ED30 last year with 18k on the clock as knew I would be doing quite high mileage (approx 20k pa) so wanted to give myself a buffer over next few years.

I've now done 40k and over that time had no problems and should still be average mileage come 5 years old with approx 60k.

So I think it's down to personal circumstances and if you feel comfortable having a high mileage motor. Personally I wouldn't buy a high mileage car due to the miles I would add on quite quickly.

But I would echo the other comments and providing it's been fully serviced by VW including cambelt then should be nothing to worry about.

Great choice of car though mate and hope you enjoy as much as I do

Your in the similar situation to me, but im having to remind myself that these cars are now approaching 3-4 years old, so average miles would be in the region of 30-40k now. I was so lucky when i found my mk4 anniversary as it had only done 15k at 3 and half years old, so it still nice and low now, as im only doing approx 8k per year.

My aim is to find a dsg ED30 with good miles and the right spec, but its proving to be very hard.   :sad1:

With all due respect, I think these questions are actually silly. What is average mileage? Is it average mileage PEOPLE do a year or average mileage ENGINES are capable of doing a year? If a car has been looked after and has high mileage, I agree it's much better than a car with low mileage. When you drive it 'normally', you're more likely to get problems.

Given the choice I think everyone here would choose a car with low mileage and full service history over the same car with high mileage and full service history.

Its not just the engine that has been subjected to the miles either - suspension components, mounts, brakes and general running gear will bear the brunt of the usage.

I was lucky when I bought mine as it was a garaged mostly weekend use car with about 20k on the clock after 3 1/2 years and full service history.  Wouldnt have bought the same car if it had 60k on the clock.

I inherited an old style mini in my youth from an ageing uncle,...it only had 300 miles on the clock but was 5 years old!

Despite a service, the car fell to bits in a year through seals and the like going!

Thanks for the response guys! It's not really the fact the car has 56k on the clock, it's more to do with putting an additional 10k on top of that each year that worries me. The difference between 60k and 80k seems a lot larger than the difference of 20k and 40k.

The car is quite highly specced, and is listed at a private dealer at £14,450, which I think is quite expensive with the mileage.

Thanks

George

Thats massively over priced

To put it into perspective, I paid under 12k for mine with 60k (on the dot), and mine has an incredibly high spec, plus its a DSG 5 door.

That price doesnt make sense!  My tuppence if your going to make a car high mileage then surely its better to buy a cheaper car that already had the depreciation than buy a low mileage higher price car and turn it into a high mileage example price wise that would surely make the most sense.  But servicing is obviously key as is condition as a high mileage abused car will end up costing alot more than one thats been cared for properly.

I was thinking more for the future, of what mileage the car will be on at the time of selling, i've had my anniversary for 5 years. If i like the Ed30 as much as the anni then i can see myself keeping it a similar time.
