Best tyre prices
« on: June 08, 2011, 10:08:28 pm »
Nearly have my GTI. I was wondering what the best prices would be for tyres for both standard 17" and 18" GTI alloys? Any recommendations? I'm not a big racer so just standards.

Thanks,
C

Have a look on Camskills site.

You can always quote them at your local tyre dealer to try and bring price down.

Okay. Total newb to 17" tyres etc. Have had a MK3 1.4 with standard tyres for the past 7 years. One time I got 4 tyres for £60 and those lasted me 2 years!

Can some pin point good looking, decent but relatively cheap 17" tyres from the Camskills site for me? They need to be good all rounders for both summer and winter.

Thanks again.

Also, for mostly casual driving how long would you expect the tyres to last?

I guess something like a Pirelli P6000 would be a good all rounder at £80 a corner.

If you want a high performing budget tyre my gf has Nexen tyres on her Mk5 GT Tdi and I am qute impressed. Good grip, resists understeer well and good in wet also. Looking at around £65 a corner.

Sounds good Leonard. Hopefully they will last me a couple of years to keep the costs down   Will look into those. Thanks!

Any Michelins that would be good around that price? I hear they last longer and have better tread.

Only had Michelin Pilot Sports before which are quite 'sporty' and are £115 a corner. Were a little noisy as well.

If you arent a racer then you should get 15k from most sets of normal tyres. If you arent concerned about having to have a premium tyre then I would go for the Nexen (They are owned by Michelin!). Think my gf has the N3000 on her car. Cant go wrong for £60.

Only downside I can think of is if you sell it within the next 2 years and the buyer wants a more sporty tyre.

If your unsure ask your local tyre dealer for recomendations, they are 'normally' pretty truthful

You could give Blackcircles a try: http://www.blackcircles.com/

I find this site very useful for reviews and deciding what tyre to buy: http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/

You can filter reviews by brand, price, or car model, and they have links to Tyre Test results. The Winter tyre test was a real eye-opener!! I bought some cheap Matador tyres for my S3 after finding out they're made by Continental in the same factory. They even look identical to the Conti.

Hope this helps.  :happy2:

Just to throw my 2p in... I really would consider investing in some premium tyres and not just take a punt with the cheapest you can find. It is an old adage, but the tyres really are the most important element of the car as they are the only bits that touch the ground and if your going to buy budgets then you may as well not have a GTI in the first place.
Personally, whether your a racer or not, I wouldn't want to drive a car with 200ps and budget tyres, it not only affects the handling but your ride, nvh & braking performance also.

I would consider maybe spending a few extra pounds on getting a good quality tyre (they arent all ridiculously expensive), if you drive the car considerately then they will last and will give you a much better driving experience.

Like others have said, check out black circles, they really do offer a good selection at competitive prices, also don't be fooled into thinking that 17" tyres will be cheaper, most manufacturers are staying clear of 17" rims therefore the tyre price for these rims is rising. 18"s are now fairly readily available, especially in 225 40 profile.

Like I said, just my 2p worth, but hope it helps.
