New windscreen - anything I should look out for???
« on: March 15, 2009, 07:24:14 pm »
Evening...

The 'screen in my beloved Ed30 was taken out by a large bolt flying off the back of a scrap lorry last week. After a bit of a battle I have managed to get the insurance company to agree to a genuine (i.e. with the 'VW' logo stamped on it) replacement and it's due to be fitted by Autoglass on Wednesday.

I've heard some horror stories about poor fitting / leaks/ damage to surrounding paintwork/trim etc. (not directed at Autoglass, I hasten to add before a lawsuit comes flying towards me!!! - just generally).

So my question is: is there anything I should be aware of (in terms of, say, particular quirks to doing this job on a Mk5) or check before signing-off on it being OK?

Thanks,

Shaun

watch the fitters like a hawk, I had my front passenger glass replaced and the fitter left shattered bits of glass inside the door (still there - can hear it), chipped the paint on bottom corner of door + BENT IT slighty   AND   2 hex bolts were missing out of the door skin! I was at work at the time and my mother signed the fitters sheet, so now have no comeback!!!
you have been warned    :fighting:

I had mine replaced by autoglass (before i knew you could ask for genuine glass  ) , the lad that done mine was very professional , seat cover and protectors over the wings so not to damage anything even cleaned the sills as he had to stand on them to get the glass out . One thing i did notice however is the gap between the top of the window and the start of the roof quite big not sure if this is because of not being genuine glass

i also had a windscreen fitted when i was down in rugby working, and no it wasnt oem glass but the van turned up and the guy seemed professional.i was out on site at the time as i was putting a new bridge in over our newly laid railway, kept popping back to check on the guy and he was working fine.after about an hour he said he was finished and i could not beleive my eyes, there was black sealant everywhere.i swear to god i nearly knock him out on the spot,i couldnt beleive this f*ckwit had the cheek to even think about leaving my car this way.(iwas pretty irate).so made him take all the interior trim off to clean with turps and then i notice the windscreen wasnt even in right.an hour later he says he;s finally done(watched him like a fat kid watches cake)and finally signed sheet.2 days later back home in manchester we had some sun so i thought id wash the car.around 21 hour later i start on the inside and see a massive stain on the a pillar passenger side, when i get over to inspect it, it f*cking soaking wet.the windsreen was leaking like a f*cking teabag.straight on the phone to cowboys r us with a few choice words, and also on to insurance to let them know how good there recommende repairers where.next day back in rugby, the firm come out to meet me(different guy this time)which iwas upset about.all he did was dump a load of sealer around the leak and said phone us if you get anymore problems.needless to say i told him to go suck my fat one.but honestly even when you watch them like an hawk they still f*ck up GOOD LUCK .....ps sorry for the rant but it still gets my back up..next time id go straight to the dealers and get the insurance to pay them

Tell them your really anal and you dont want any damage, get them to check it over before you start to show there's no damage before, and tell them you want it the same after (you can do this in a nice way or in a nasty way depending on your size  :jumping: ) , they can damage the paint around the edges with the tools they use so check these areas  :happy2:

Quick update on my OP.

Guy from Autoglass came out at the agreed time... turns out he's a car nut and is as anal about his H***a C***c Type R as I am about my Ed30 so he took great care and as far as I can tell has done a perfect job. Local dealers had even supplied the right colour glass (it's green in my '07 Ed30 BTW) - miracle.

Before starting work he warned me that the rain sensor on Mk5's either pops off the old screen really easily or else is absolutely impossible - there's no rhyme nor reason based on model, spec or year of manufacture apparently.

Sadly mine just wouldn't come off - he actually cracked the old screen trying to prise it away to show me! They've ordered another and as soon as it arrives they'll call me to arrange fitting - apparently it's a 5 minute job.

Overall I'm delighted.

Cheers,

Shaun

sounds like you had a good one then!

The guy who did mine last august was ok... I did confess before he started that I'd be watching (partly due to I'd never seen one done before, and also cos the car is like my child lol!)

The awful bit was watching his expressions cos it was a right sod to get out!  Almost painful to watch!  He stuggled with my mirror/rain sensor too but managed to prise it eventually

Not an experience I wish to have again tbh!  :scared:

Autoglass called this morning to say the new sensor should be with them on Saturday morning so they'll be out in the afternoon to fit it - they'll call a.m. to confirm what time!

So overall can't fault their service - I do seem to have struck lucky though judging by comments from others.

My advice is if (God forbid!) this happens to you tell them you live in the Southampton area so you get to deal with the local depot!!!
