Hilarious
Handbrake.... Google it. That can rip DVDs to whatever file type/size you require.

No providing you use an iTunes compatible file output you can use iTunes or whatever the standard iPad movie app is called.

Try the VLC app it lets you save .avi files or any type of video format for that reason. I am not sure if it is still avail for the iPad as I know there was some shenanigans over copyright?

Handbrake, but each rip takes a bloody age! its an easy programme to run but it does take a long time to rip over to the iPad.

Nero multimedia 10 can do this but a bit expensive to buy if that's all you want to use it for.

I bought some software from slysoft.com ages ago and it was pretty good vfm, but it now costs a bomb. I believe it will work for free for 21 days as a trial and then you have to buy the licence, so if you can get all you want done in a 3 week period it'll be free!
The downloads you'd want are AnyDVD and CloneDVD Mobile to rip discs to an iPad. Really simple to use, the former just runs in the background and strips off the protection on the disc and the latter does the conversion to the file type of your choice.

Guys,
As mentioned handbrake is the best app to use to convert the file to mp4, I use it all the time
A 700mb ripped movie (.avi) takes about 40 minutes to convert, so not too bad.
VLC you can only use on a pc not an ipad

I've got vlc too but never figured it out. How do you rip a DVD using vlc?
