« on: June 20, 2011, 01:01:15 pm »
Hiya,
Has anyone fitted a charge cooler system to their mk5, if so what did you go for and a rough idea on cost would be greatly appreciated...?
Cheers

Think most people are running intercoolers on the GTI.

Did not know a charge cooler system was available?

as such i dont believe there is a kit available. It would have to be universal cooler and custom piping hence no one has done it. I looked into this as you can achieve far lower intake temps with one but due to no kit being out there and also the tfsi engines are so tightly compacted into the engine bay that to find the space for a charge cooler along with the additional pipework was far too much hassel so got a ths intercooler instead lol   :fighting2:

I would have thought if the op wanted to head down that route then water/meth would be a better solution.

I remember these used to be very popular... One I remember was in a mag in a RS Turbo and the charge cooler, or at least the water tank was in the spare wheel well...?

yeh they were really popular. A friend of mine has a clio running 400bhp and he swears by them. Kept on at me to get one instead of an intercooler and was adament that it could be done for half an intercoolers price. I couldnt be doing with the agro so went down the easy route. He may swear by them ut his clio was on the road a day before he stretched the head bolts and now having a custon copper gasket made and strengthened head bolt. crazy  :rolleye:

a good friend of mine makes these and they are defo not cheaper then a intercooler and no real gain on a mk5 as there is room to fit a good size intercooler .

Seems odd that people want to fit a chargecooler.  The Focus RS has a chargecooler as standard and most people were fitting air to air intercoolers as they were better at keeping the inlet temps down. I couldnt afford it so just uprated the chargecooler rad to a radtec one.
