Air Con Failure linked to Compressor- POLL
« on: June 23, 2011, 09:57:40 pm »
As per my previous post, highlighting the issue I now face, I thought I'd poll and ask how many people have had this issue and the HUGE bill that it comes with...I have read a good number of cases on here and the bills aint no joke.

my issue is listed here http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,31316.0.html

My question is do we list this and see how many people have experienced this and then consider highlighting it to VW?  i know that all cars have common faults, but this is a ridiculous piece of engineering that costs nearly a third of the value of some vehicles out there.

So what year was your car i.e 05/06 and when did the problem begin and become repaired and how?

Nope the signal is duff and doesn't send. The system used to do that but began with odd sounds...see the other thread. It was raised as an issue and then I got told it was normal. 18 months on and now this and it's out of warranty

Keep em coming...to me it's a system design fault. But £800 how the hell is mine so much! Any other prices? As they quoted £1200 just for the compressor plus £320 ish for the small fan?!?

One owner from new 07 plate with Full VWSH. The air-con was re-gassed in warranty, but the compressor failed six months outside of the warranty. Lots of bubbling noises and no cold air. VW paid for the parts and part of the labour after they were approached by the dealer. As far as I can remember my contribution was about the £120 mark. Looks like I was lucky after reading some comments on here. :sad1:

Some interesting reading on compressor failure:-

Can somebody tell me something?

How have VW managed to get away with doing nothing about solving this issue? :surprised:

Mine doesn't work and never has done, I was told when I bought it that it just needed a re gas. Very green of me at the time.

My Touran on the other hand, 2004 2l sport, 115000 miles still going strong!

I may try and figure out how to remove the AC system to save weight, fuel and better air flow to the IC.

Sometimes VW amaze me!

55 plate
I'm the 3rd owner
Total compressor failure
I've emailed VW but I'm not the original owner of the car so don't know if they will do anything
Have been quoted £100 by a garage (non VW) to install a new one plus cost of a new compressor

I had no cold air from mine this last month - booked a Air Con service at VW £79.99 it turned out to be a faulty Air con pressure switch. They said there was no pressure in the pipes (I didn't know which to check)

That was swapped and system checked and serviced cost £128.28 and now its nice and cool - just need some sunshine to feel it was money well spent - 57 plate GTi

My issues started last August (57 plate still under warranty) - failed compressor. Replaced. Replacement compressor found to be faulty within 3 weeks of being on car. No qualms over warranty/issue - replaced again. November - further A/C failure - compressor changed again. Am on my forth compressor, all good - touch wood (car now out of warranty). High pressure switch did fail a coupl eof months back - my VW dealer was very good sorting this in light of AC 'history'

There will never be a recall on it as it's not a safety issue BUT
if you are loyal to the brand and have a full dealer service history then Volkswagen WILL contribute to the cost of the repair
If the system is low on gas then it won't work (loose average of 10% per year) and a regas may help

Well received a call fromt he dealer and the response they got from VW customer care was 10% of £1500! so a misery £150 for a loyal VW owner from 1994 onwards...and all my cars have been VW service history...shocking.
