PC to MAC----- Transfering data

Hi guys,

right ive got a few questions for the techies on the forum

Im soon to be moving from my DELL XPS to a new iMac 27" thing. I have transfered a lot of data (quite painlessly which i was surprised at) via firewire onto a 2TB external hard drive. I just wondered, things like word docs, excel docs, will the file types be recognised by office on the mac?


there will probably be some more questions when the mac  arrives  :scared:

The same docs should be readable by ms office. You can try it. Not sure if there are version differences and you might need a bulk converter. Alternatively, open the file on PC, Save As and then change the file type to match the version on the mac if it's a lesser one.

word of advice, :happy2: make sure any external drive that you back up from PC is not NTFS formatted, as you will only be able to read form the device not write to it once connected to the iMac.

just got my drive connected to my imac with a 9 pin firewire 800 cable, and i cant see my files. is it because it done in the windows file system?

basically, i dragged and dropped all my documents etc and put them all in one folder

Like the above post said, is the drive formatted to NTFS? Mac's will not read that format.
It will read a drive that's fat 32 though.

Then I can only assume the drive is fat 32 and the folder you're looking for is over 4GB in size.
Fat 32 has problems with files/folders over 4GB so make sure no file or folder is above the 4GB mark.
