Grouping Apple Displays and Saving Layouts....
« on: July 02, 2011, 07:53:49 am »
.
I've just hooked up my Apple Cinema 23" screen (as I no longer need it at home) to Steve's (my co-producer) MacBook Pro 15" in his recording studio. If anyone here has experience of grouping displays (alexperkins IIRC) I'd like to know about how to save which windows appear on which screen on a programme's (Logic) loading. At the moment the main Arrange window loads on the MacBook and has to be dragged to and enlarged on the 23" screen. The 15" is 'primary' with Menu Bar and Dock etc and the 23" is 'secondary'. I guess I could ask this question on the Apple Discussions forum but response might be quicker here.

It's very cool dragging a window off the edge of one screen and seeing it magically bridge the gap and appear from the edge of the other screen  :notworthy:

Thanks  :drinking:

Does logic not remember? If you have the mixer in on one screen and the timeline on the other, what happens when you re-open the logic session?

....It hasn't remembered so far but perhaps Steve didn't re-open the same saved Logic session - We were in a bit of a hurry to try out different things at the time. I'm in studio again next Tuesday so will see then. Yesterday we were concentrating more on setting it up and seeing what advantages there were. It's particularly good to be able to edit the Midi (Steve's strength, not mine!) at much larger size without compromising the main Arrange overview with its Timeline on the other screen. It's a luxury but a very useful one. When it arrives I reckon my single 27" iMac screen will be plenty big enough for my work in Logic at home!

I reckon we could probably save it all in Autoload too. Sorry, my question might be a bit premature - It's just the excitement of a new toy!

Thinking about it i'm almost 100% sure that the programs will remember their location!  :happy2:

Is there not an option to save the workspace? Typically Window > Workspace > Save Workspace...

....Yes, I think Logic Pro 8 allows you to save as many as 9 different 'workspaces'/screensets. The question is whether it does so across dual screens - I'll check this myself on Tuesday.

.
For those who use Logic Studio, select Screenset > Unlock... and arrange your windows how you want them to appear including scaling and on which display (if you are using two monitors)... and then Save and Lock. When you re-open that song project it will all display as you left it locked. You can save and lock each project to display individually different. 'Unlock > Save > Lock' is the key.
