Shouldn't be a prob considering that famous BMW F1 engine was a 1.5 4 pot running 3.5 to 5.5 bar boost with max rev of 11.5k rpm giving power outputs of 750 to 1200 bhp!

Oh they were using KKK turbos too and Bosch ECUs lol

So using 21st century tech it should be piece of cake really.

Has Porsche patented that design / idea? Cos no one else seems to use it.

Now that VAG owns Porsche maybe it'll filter thru to the mass market models.

Dunno to be honest. I think it's pretty pricey hence why only Porsche have used it up till now on petrol turbo's.

I dont think this will be a good move for F1, small engine with huge turbo is one thing but they also have less engines to last the season aswell, some teams have trouble with reliability now.

I suppose there will be some spectacular engine blows though.

Then theres the noise, a 1.6 aint gonna sound anywhere near as good as the V8, it'll be like hearing the diesal sound in LMP, just wrong...

During the first phase of qualifying, any driver who fails to set a lap within 107 percent of the fastest time will not be allowed to start the race. However, in exceptional circumstances, which could include a driver setting a suitable time during practice, the stewards may permit the car to start.

Good news IMO.  I think the tail end teams were taking the p!ss at times last season with their lack of pace

If a driver fails to use both specifications of dry weather tyres during a race, they will be excluded from the results. If a race is suspended and can’t be restarted, and a driver has failed to use both sets of tyres, 30 seconds will be added to the driver’s race time.

The rear-wing system will be electronically governed and will only be available for activation when a driver is less than one second behind another at pre-determined points on the track. It will then be disabled once the driver brakes. The FIA hopes the system will boost overtaking opportunities during races.

Although the adjustable rear wing can be used at all times during practice sessions and qualifying, it can only be activated once a driver has completed at least two laps of the race itself. Like KERS (which will reintroduced next season after the teams agreed to suspend its use in 2010) the system won’t be compulsory.

In other changes, minimum car weight has been raised by 20kg to 640kg, to give teams running KERS more flexibility in terms of weight distribution, a second tether will be added to every wheel to improve safety and F-ducts and double diffusers have been banned.

As well as their technical revisions, the FIA have also updated the sporting regulations for 2011. Gearboxes will need to last for five races, instead of four, whilst a curfew will be imposed on team personnel connected with the operation of the cars. This will last between midnight to 6am when practice is scheduled to start at 10am, or 1am to 7am if practice is scheduled to start at 11am

The FIA's World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) has approved new regulations which will see the 2.4 litre V8s currently used by Formula One teams replaced by four cylinder 1.6 litre engines from 2013. The decision to give the go-ahead to the changes follows lengthy discussions between the FIA, engine manufacturers and specialists.

The more environmentally-friendly units are expected to deliver a 35 percent reduction in fuel consumption, whilst providing the same level of performance enjoyed by today's F1 drivers. Energy recovery systems and additional energy management will be utilised to ensure this is possible.

“The WMSC approved the introduction of a new specification engine from 2013, underlining the FIA’s commitment to improving sustainability and addressing the needs of the automotive industry,” explained the FIA. “Following dialogue with the engine manufacturers and experts in this field, the power units will be four cylinders, 1.6 litre with high pressure gasoline injection up to 500 bar.”

Rev limits on the new engines will be reduced from the current 18,000 rpm to a maximum of 12,000 rpm.

An additional revision to the 2013 regulations will see a drop in the number of engines at drivers' disposal. Currently they can use eight units a season without penalty, but this will be limited to five in 2013 and reduced to four for subsequent seasons.

team orders ARE ALLOWED in 2011 

Following 2010’s final meeting of its World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) in Monaco on Friday, Formula One racing’s governing body, the FIA, has outlined regulation changes that will come into force over the next three seasons.

Among the major revisions for next season are the removal of the ban on team orders, the introduction of driver-adjustable rear wings, the effective outlawing of double diffusers, stricter bodywork deflection tests and a requirement for gearboxes to last five rather than four Grand Prix weekends. The 2011 regulations are expected to be published by the FIA in their entirety soon.

Technical changes for 2012 will include the use of biomass-derived fuels and tighter suspension regulations. The biggest changes, however, will come in 2013 with the introduction of a new engine formula (see related story), replacing the current 2.4 litre V8s with 1.6 litre four-cylinder units.

A number of changes were made to the Sporting and Technical Regulations for 2011, including:

- The article forbidding team orders (39.1) is deleted. Teams will be reminded that any actions liable to bring the sport into disrepute are dealt with under Article 151c of the International Sporting Code and any other relevant provisions
- Amendments to the list of penalties Stewards are permitted to apply
- Revisions to driving and driver conduct
- A limit on the width of the fast lane in the pits
- The introduction of a regulation permitting the Race Director to close the pit lane during a race for safety reasons
- The re-introduction of intermediate tyres for 2011
- Penalties to be applied to any driver who fails to use both specification of dry weather tyre during the race
- An amendment requiring gearboxes to be used for five consecutive races, instead of four
- Clarification on when cars can overtake the safety car
- A refinement to the principles of the regulations already agreed concerning moveable rear wings
- A better definition of the reference plane, and reinforcement of bodywork deflection tests, especially at the front of the reference plane
- The allowance for anti-intrusion panels to protect drivers’ legs

Amendments to the 2012 Technical Regulations were made in the following areas:

- Team communications will be made available to broadcasters
- The inclusion of fuel compounds produced from biomass
- A limitation on suspension uprights

The major changes will be:

• Much smaller front and rear wings;
• A far greater proportion of the total downforce of the cars will be created by the underfloor, compared to the wings;
• A major reduction in the amount of total downforce created by the car;
• To achieve this, the underfloor of the cars will be shaped along its length to generate downforce for the first time since the 1982 season - currently cars have bottoms that are flat between the wheels;
• The average proportion of a lap that a driver is able to spend on full throttle to be cut from 70% in 2010 to 50% in 2013;
• Tyres will remain large and chunky to ensure cornering speeds remain high.
