Recommend me a washing machine!
« on: July 19, 2011, 05:00:21 pm »
Well, at long last my ancient Bosch washing machine has developed enough faults to warrant replacing it.
It has served me well, having been used at least once a day every day for the last 14 or so years and the only problems so far had been a couple of switches break and the brushes went once. They don't make 'em like that anymore!!

I bought my last one on recommendation from my cousin who used to repair electrical stuff, he told me not to buy a Miele or whatever costing big ££ and instead just get a German built Bosch that didn't have too many features as they never go wrong. His suggestion of how to sort out a good machine from a bad one was by how solid the side panels are which is a good indicator of the build quality. Cheap British ones had bendy crap side panels and decent German ones were built like tanks and lasted forever he told me. He was quite correct and it hardly had any faults over the years whilst my in-law's have been thuogh various Hotpoints etc in that time and their machines probably get half the use mine has had.

But the seal now leaks, the pump has just expired and it has got to the stage where you know another fault won't be far behind so maybe it's time to move on  :sad1:

So, what's good, not too expensive, reliable and built to last?

TIA

Be prepared to wait longer for your washing cycle to complete with these newer, greener washing machines.
Without traction power is nothing!

We bought a Miele 500 or 5000 something or other over 8 years ago and its used twice a day without missing a beat.
Also got a free 10 year warranty with it.  Must be the vw of washing machines :happy2:
                        Money well spent

I`ve had one of these for about 12 months, it replaced my 15 year old Hotpoint which never missed a beat, so far the LG is doing its job apart from when on spin, the darn thing dances all over the kitchen whatever spin setting its on, size of load makes no difference either. So just for this problem alone I wish I`d never seen the bloody LG

Andy, I bought a Miele about 10 years ago and wouldn't buy anything else.

It was the cheapest one at 500 quid but fit and forget.

defo worth a look.

If its dancing bout when on spin the legs aren't set right on the bottom

John Lewis ones are rebadged AEG / Zanussi machines and get good reviews plus a 2 year warranty as standard.  Worth a look.

Good point! But we're talking about them in a manly way ie. whether we're going to be forever fixing the sodding thing and how much it's going to cost. I'm not too bothered about how white my white's are

Thanks for all the suggestions so far gentlemen, all points taken on board and digested. The only thing my Missus seems to be concerned about is how long the wash cycle takes on some of them. The Bosch ones come with a 15 min wash which she likes the sound of as our old one takes at least 45 min to do anything, an hour and a half is more the norm.
