Car pinking and had engine management light
« on: August 17, 2011, 07:41:21 pm »
Hi wonder if anyone can help. I have a 2006 golf gti and have noticed it 'pinking' under load and had engine management on for couple of days. took it nearby performance tuner that said their code reader pointed towards knock sensor but to have VW check it to make sure of right part. Vw said it was the intake flap and I needed a new one and this would stop pinking and remove light. Light gone but still pinking any ideas or help welcome please. Thanks

Yup you need the car vcds scanned.
What grade of petrol are you using?
Without traction power is nothing!

My engine pinks too, mostly when cold start from the morning. I use shell V-Power fuel. Should the engine management light illuminate when the engine is turned to the first click of they key but engine still off?

Retarded question but what would it sound like on this engine.

When you noticed it on cold start for example

Are you using the term pinking to describe a missfire?

The TFSI is knock limited so in theory it cant pink, but if it senses pre-ignition or detonation it will retard timing. If its a missfire, check coils and plugs.

By pinking I mean a loudish tapping noise from the engine, not the injectors tho. I had a feeling the car could poss be misfiring as at idle from could start (engine idling high) it makes a slight judder sometimes then stops.

Coil packs were replaced around a month ago but not sure about plugs.

Also how could the timing be out, from when the timing belt was replaced? As this was from VW. Engines seems to run fine, according to the trip computer tho fuel consumption is ridiculous

I was talking about ignition timing, not cam timing

Apologies, how would have the ignition timing went out? I don't have any warning light come up so what could be the cause of the problem as it is only really apparent from cold startup!

Hmm not sure if its the same prob as me but from cold start ( car stood for around 7 plus hours ) car will attempt to start shudders as it trys to continur to run for like 1 sec then stops, the next turn of the key and it starts fine ??
