Do i have a jack?

i was going to swap my wheels around today, putting the rears on the fronts and vice versa due to the rears having more tread.  my car doesnt have a spare wheel (08 GTi) but has some foam and a compressor.  should it also have a jack???  there seems to be a cut out in the boot tidy thing that holds the other stuff.  if it doesnt come with one then i shall get a trolley jack.

I think if you had a spare wheel, then you'd have a jack too. Mine certainly does, though rather crap for much than emergency stuff. Imports had the foam stuff instead, which is what you might have.

If you're going to swap wheels around, get a proper trolley jack. Just a lot easier and safer to use IMO.

are you saying that generally the cars came with spare wheels?  was the foam system an option or was it only reserved for parallel imports...sure mine is standard uk car.

Yup. Unless someone has deliberately replaced it, it's generally an import. Where was the PDI done?

I thought that you had to pay extra for the spare wheel & associated kit these days....

Depends on the make/model. But the MK5 and MK6 both come with a space saver spare wheel and jack as standard. Have a look on the VW website.

i will check after the F1 qualifying!  any other way of knowing if its a parallel import?  think i am going to get a trolley jack and axle stands tomorrow.

Cheers Mr Wolf - I was going on what I was told by Skoda when looking at a new Octy vRS a couple of months back. Just assumed that the same applied to VWs when buying my 07 GTI.

Wouldn't surprise me if the dealers took the stuff out and sold it on, only to fob you off with a foam and compressor kit.

I'll second that from experience, only use the roadside jack in an emergency.

Used it when changing rear brakes, just before I could slide axle stand all the way under the jack failed and the car landed on the jack.  The sill took the weight of the car landing back on the extended jack. Left a nasty dent in my sill

regardless, i will definately be buying a trolley jack tomorrow...what happened to you Mike is the kind of situation i want to avoid.  must be gut wrenching when that happens.  i remember when i bought a cheap-ish paddock stand for my ducati 748 and whilst single handedly putting it on one of the little wheels flew off and the bike landed on its side

Does it have an alarm ?, what does it say in the service book ?

.............front wheel drive & it's recomended to have the best tread on the rear wheels,less chance of the rear letting go. I would leave alone.

yes it has an alarm.  no stamp in what i think is the pdi section, it has full vw history, the first stamp being at 12k...probably looking like a european parallel import i reckon...which is fine, my mk4 gt tdi pd130 came direct from Holland to the UK to its first owner.  

i have checked out all the option codes and the first one on the sticker turns out to be this...

B0N = Component parts set, complying with vehicle type for Great Britain, various parts

does that shed light on parallel import or not?

i always thought the advice was that the driven wheels should have the better tread.  there's not a great deal of difference between front and rear tyres but enough to make me think that i would rather have more tread at the front.  i know what you mean about the rear though, however i think it would have to be a pretty dynamic event to have the rear come round, i dont think simply the tread would make that happen.
