I find these arguments quite interesting as there are quite varied views from all members.

I dont think its fair to make a direct comparison in your spreadsheet between shell regular and V-power because as far as i know, V-power isnt just regular fuel with and 3-4 Ron on top which equates to extra miles per tank, you have to take into account of the detergents that are in V-power. If shell regular had these detergents as well, then yes, the spreadsheet comparison would be quite accurate.

I take a best of both worlds approach -i use 3 tank fulls of tesco momentum which is about £1.36 litre and 1 tank of v-power which is about £1.41 a litre.

This way, im exceeding the recommended minimum 98 Ron fuel as per instruction manual, saving a bit of money by using the momentum 99 Ron fuel but also benefiting from the detergents in V-power.

For members who use the 95 Ron stuff - There must be a reason why VW recommend 98 Ron fuel, they built the engines, have done all the years of R+D so must have a valid reason for recommending a minimum of 98 Ron fuel.

Im sure, the car will run with tyres at 25PSI, cheap oil that doesnt meet the required VW spec, cheap brake fluid that does meet VW spec, cheap non oem coolant or cheap gearbox oil but it wont be running at it's best. Most people wouldnt dream of skimping on stuff as mentioned above but will skimp on the fuel  :stupid:

My Ed30 feels like i'm driving with the handbrake on slightly with the normal 95 stuff. I only used it a couple of times in the last two years out of necessity.

With 98 ron the car is much more responsive and reurns around 3-5 mpg more.

I've just had my quarterly V-Power statement and a £8.50 voucher off my next fill-up so if you can win on fuel spend, V-Power is a Winner!

My Gti 2006 says 98ron.

I didnt realise till this thread lol. Ive been using sainsburys 97ron. Will be using 99ron v power once mapped mind as find  VAG cars seem to run better on v power over momentum. Was other way round on my old RS. Weird.

When the kids were not at school i was seeing 40mpg to n from work. I dont even hit a motorway either. Get about 32-35 now because of traffic.

sure this has been covered...but seeing as i am making an observation rather than asking a question, hopefully i wont get shouted at  :scared:

since owning my 08 GTi for just 5 weeks, i have used V-Power on each fill up and standard Shell unleaded on only one.  i have a spreadsheet for fuel...(yes, it is a bit nerdy but i am sure some of you guys do it too!)...and over a tank full i got 38mpg on 98RON and 36mpg on 95RON.  the cost of a tank differs by £4 yet i probably will only get an extra 22 miles from the tank.  on cost alone it might not seem worth it i suppose, but i feel "programmed" to use V-Power only.

More importantly, how on earth do you get 38mpg ?
I struggle to get 30 on Tesco99 and I'd be down around 28 on normal 95

I find in my stage 1 Octavia VRS mkII that it runs better on momentum.  I tried V power but it felt flat whereas with momentum it has more mid range grunt.

I run my Pirelli stage 2 on V-Power or Tesco99, it is a little sweeter and crisper on V-Power but pulls hard on both. I would not run 95 for risk of knock and the map retarding the ignition timing which would mean rubbish performance and mpg until the map adjusts back.

How do people get 38 !!! I average 27.0mpg and that is a fair amount of motorway journeys. On a 120 mile motorway trip I will only see 29-30 at best. I have tested my mpg and it is virtually spot on checking via a full tank between refuelling, are some meter out ?
