MOT Help < Bearings advise?
« on: October 06, 2011, 01:17:05 pm »
Been couple places today, all given me different answers 'c*cks' !

1) Wing mirror indicator bulb

- Are these really dealer only bulb? or can you tell me what bulb I need?

2) Front wheel bearing
- Most places telling me have to buy the bearing in the hub? can;t get it seperate?
- Average price £100 (incl vat) is this OK?
- Is the hub a hard job? or is it simple un bolting job? no special tools or anything?

Info: what it the torgue setting is needed to tighten the 'drive shaft nut' ?

Can't help with the wheel bearing, but I can with the indicator bulb. Here is a guide to getting to the bulb assembly, unfortunately you have to strip down the whole mirror:

http://golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=103242

The only thing I would do different to this guide is once the glass is removed, I would remove the casing so that it doesn't get scratched. When I changed my mirrors for folding ones I covered the top and back edges of the casing with masking tape to protect it. I also removed the glass from the top and not the bottom as per the guide. I'm afraid I don't know a part number for the bulb assembly.

Does the glass just pull off? not tabs nothing?

Basically I need to know < do I have to change the whole lens? or can I just get the bulb?

They are LED's so you will need a whole new unit (I take it the indicator is smashed as otherwise I would be checking wiring) its not the side with the broken speaker is it? could be common wiring break or loose plug somewhere does the mirror on the side adjust from the joystick?

Cant help on the bearing sorry.

Re the bearing it probably is part of the hub.  It was the case on my wife's 2004 polo and was told this was because it works out cheaper at dealer rates to make the part easier to change even though its making the part more expensive.

seems to be yes. Plus been told taking the actual bearing out is a nightmare with a tone press. Anyone joy the torque of the large drive shaft bolt? Big centre one

IIRC the hub/bearing assembly is complete.

Remove brake setup & remove 4 bolts in back of hub carrier & then it is out

Front bearing is fairly easy.  Comes as a complete unit so nothing to press out. Just need to pop the cv out the back and remove 4 bolts that hold the hub onto the axle. Fitting is the reverse.
