Mines awful too, just bought it last week and around town I'm getting around 15-18mpg and not really booting it. Only had it a week and I'm already considering selling it for an ibiza cupra tdi as i just can't afford to be putting that much petrol in it!! Did you ever find the problem?

NO offense meant to anyone here but if you buy a GTI (Sports orientated car) then MPG was clearly not a concern  :surprised:, if your concerned about MPG buy a diseasal  :happy2:

Was thinking this. Although mine is usually above 20mpg even when putting my foot down so sounds like something's not right with the OP's.

I don't use my GTI for commuting so MPG is not really an issue for me and the excitement I get when I put my foot down more than makes up for it IMO :happy2:

Same goes, work from home, so it's sat on drive most of the time, takes me to the golf club and to JKD lessons, most driving is "Spirited" when it gets on the road  :happy2:.

6 weeks ago on my move from Norfolk to cornwall (408 miles) I averaged 34mpg on the journey (80 miles of A roads and 328 miles of Motorway/dual carriageway)  :happy2:

You've said that your commute is only 5.5 miles.  The car won't be warmed up until (if you're lucky) halfway.

Why not ride a bike - save money, get fitter?  5.5 miles would be a perfect distance.  And it'll be better for your car, too.

And I wholeheartedly agree: you don't buy a GTI if you're concerned with MPG!

....Last week I drove a 492 mile trip and averaged 28mpg (on the display). The journey took in the A34, M40, A43, M1, and plenty of cross country roads. All on the fast side though.

Reported mpg figures really seem to vary a lot.

I completely ignore what the readout states, it's usually a load of tosh  :signLOL:, I filler her up and work out my mpg, it is usually 10-20% different from readout on trip comp  :signLOL:

Well, I can't be arsed to work it out as it's not going to make an iota of difference in the way I enjoy driving nor whether I decide to keep the car or not.

Hang on that sounds ok. He does 60 miles before light comes on which is usually around 40miles. Making it around 100miles to 20 which I personally think that's ok if that's mixed driving

Is your trip computer showing on the average readout? (Circle with line through it?) I regualrly get over 30 mpg around town with my 2005 GTI and Ive seen over 40 on a run many times , driving on the speed limit or just below - I find driving at 80 plus on the motorway lowers my run mpg to the mid 30s. If normal town driving in a fully warmed through GTI is returning less than 20 mpg then there is something wrong with your car - either that or you are in constant traffic jams. Even when that happens to me i still get high 20s and once traffic is flowing again its back up to the mid 30s in a few miles.

MPG of a run from Berwick upon Tweed to Galashiels (45 miles) , mix of A and B roads , 50 -70 mph.

So if I drive with both doors open I get better MPG?

Stupid answer time

Have you reset the MPG meter to zero ? , right hand stalk bottom button hold until the mpg meter resets, you will be amazed what a difference it makes !!

Just a thought !!
