Starting Issues
« on: October 14, 2011, 08:21:50 am »
I know the MKV is not a good starter but how do people start their cars in the morning.
Mine has 6,000 miles on it and is used every day but NEVER starts first time. Sometimes it takes 3 goes.
I have tried everything, not turning the key until some of the lights have gone out, which worked for a bit, pressing the accelerator, not pressing the accelerator.
The mad thing is that when I came back from 2 weeks holiday it started first time! Also we were snowed in for a week last winter it stood with 2 foot of snow on it for a week and started first go.
What do people find the best way to start up.

Hi there.

My 2005 GTI starts first time every time and without throttle.  I would suggest that something is not quite right with yours and maybe a scan with VCDS would be a good start point, as would be looking at the basics as in when was it last serviced, has it has its spark plugs changed, have the coil packs been checked under the recall, etc.

Hope this helps!

Cheers OEM+ DUB.
The car was serviced in August. Mine is a 2008/9 build but only registered in 2010 so it was laid up for a while. Car drives fantastic no issues at all its just not a good starter.
Once warm it will start first time every time even if left for 5-6 hours.
Would you think the coil packs would need checked/changing and would I get a recall letter as the car has 3 years warranty on it.

Mine was a bit hesitant on cold starts...would 'cough' before starting, but leaving the key in the final position before cranking for 3-4 seconds really does make a difference to mine.

I was told the reason for delayed starting was a symptom of the direct-injection system and the fact that the high-pressure fuel pump is driven by the engine, hence needing time to build up pressure once cranking starts.

Apart from a recent flat battery mine has always started on the button.  Even when its been left standing for over a week still never gives me any problems.

My GTi was a bit hesitant on cold starts, but dealers changed the coil under warranty and fine now.

Given the age of the car the coil packs should be OK, i.e. the later ones.  If the car drives as you would expect it could be something as simple as a temperature sensor issue.  If you have warranty I would suggest booking it in for a check and scan on the basis that it does not start well from cold.
