Colour coding side skirts - What's the best method?
« on: October 23, 2011, 12:31:56 pm »
It's about time I got my bits colur coded

I have got a ed30 rear bumper and splitter and intend to get these sprayed to match the colour of the car. I intend to use the standard GTI side skirts and also get these colour coded at the same time.

The question is, what's the best way to do this before I go and speak to my bodyshop man? High build primer or sand down smooth?

I basically need to be sure that I cannot see any of the textured finish.....

What is your experience?

If you red scotch the plastic after cleaning them and then use high build primer, that will fill in the texture so when you wet flat them, they will be completely smooth... :happy2:

I've just had a new set of skirts done.

They panel wiped them to remove any contamination, plastic primed them then used high build primer.
After each coat of primer they were blocked to ensure they were completely smooth.
Once smooth they were coloured and laquered.

Just need to fit them now.......

I did my front splitter myself and plan on doing the skirts as well, for the splitter, I sanded the texture with a random orbit sander using 240 grit, then a coat plastic primer, once dry I rubbed it down to get rid of any remaining plastic fibres.  Couple of coats of normal primmer, colour, lacquer, then a light sand with 1200 wet n dry and finally a session with the machine polisher.  Ok, so its a bit time consuming, but the finish is exactly the same as my GTi valance (which was done at a bodyshop) but it cost me the price of the materials, which I can reuse on the skirts.  :happy2:

I wold recommened some king of plasticiser base coat and at front and rear where tyres throw stones at them they get chipped constantly, i know one of mates used a primer coat then the primer coat (In same approx colour as car) mixed with a plasticiser and then several top coats, this helps stop stone chips being noticeable, mine also need doing and will be getting mine done in next 3 weeks when it goes in for front splitter being painted (Another problem arear for stone chips  :scared:

get the bodyshop to prep them

99% of bodyshops won't take on work that has been prepped by someone else for a few reasons, firstly they may not of been prepped properly which can result in reactions with the paint or flaking of the paint, secondly, all bodyshops have their own process of prepping parts and have different products they use
