Basically is there any difference other than the obvious between an 05 plate and an 08 plate?

Yes, like all cars, there were revisions through its life. Commonest are no roof antenna unless factory fitted with satnav in which case it's a sharfin style one; blue glass instead of green; rubber around the rear window. I think some might've had random holes from the fog grilles removed. Can't recall any other exterior changes.

Engine is different.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Any idea when these revisions where made?

I wondered why I'd seen some with old fashioned long aerial and some with shark fins.. I assumed the shark fins were aftermarket!

What changes were made to the engine? The standard GTi's are all 200BHP aren't they?

Yeah think the engines were just revised versions.

No idea. There are a quite a few on here who know the differences in more detail.

The turbo remained standard but the manufacturer KKK has gone through a few revisions in part number. Don't know what was different between the different revisions.

There were some minor changes in the engines for emission reasons.  Upshot is that the early engine (AXX), found up to 2006 sometime are the last of the true lean burn fuel stratified injection engines.  The earlier engines seem to be more prone to a fault in the cam chain tensioner which can make them sound even more diesel like than normal.  All TFSI engines sound dieselish at tick over though.  Doesn't happen that much though.  Same power output from all the 'normal' GTI engines. ED30 and Pirelli's had 230 bhp and these engines were more heavily modified, most notably with a bigger turbo.
