MAF problem?
« on: October 29, 2011, 08:09:00 pm »
I have searched and think that it is the problem?
I am running stage 2+ but just recently I have been thinking that I am getting used to the power.
My wife then commented that something doesn't feel right? I.e. down on power to which I replied 'your getting used to it'!
However today I did some logs with VCDS:

Before I fitted a Forge TwinTake I had MAF readings of 245g/s so with the approx 0.8 correctional factor approx 306bhp?
So after I fitted the Forge TwinTake my economy went down to about 28mpg from, sometimes 38mpg, and I didn't notice an increase in power.
So to the logs today: 217g/s MAF which equates to approx 271bhp! WTF? I knew something was wrong as when I had the BDM Intake fitted it was completely mental and I took it off to calm it down.
I was expecting an approximate BHP of 330?ish?
Also I have tried loads of settings via the REVO SPS box, even valet mode. Still no better than 30mpg. Also, come to think of it, except for valet mode the boost settings didn't really make much of a difference to performance even in standard.
When I was intially logging I had some dialogue with vRS Carl, I think, who was super helpful and he seemed to think my initial figures were right with the OEM airbox.
So whats the opinion? MAF sensor? I did a scan too and nothing is wrong. The threads I have read seem to think this could be true.
By the way its an ED30, THS Intercooler, BSH PCV revamp, Revo 2+(9-5-9), Forge Twintake, RS4 pressure relief, Autotech Internals and Pipewerx downpipe/Cat to standard system.
I nearly did the rolling road day the other weekend at JKM but I must have known in my heart something was not right!
Many many thanks in advance and sorry BDM Alex for not waitng for a reply to my PM but I know your busy.

Have you checked your fuel trims on block 032, this will give a good indication as to whether your MAF is healthy or not. Also how come your running Fuel 9? I would be running a richer setting such as 6 on Stage 2+.

I will check block 032 next then.

I already have a problem with rich at idle due to the 2+ map so I don't think running richer is going to help. Also this is from the SPS user guide:

If you are not familiar with AFR (air fuel ratio) we recommend leaving this setting at
9. This adjustment is only a target and will not force the ECU to comply; if the setting
is outside of the safety parameters the computer will compensate for the error
allowing the safe operation of the vehicle.

I don't understand why you want to run richer either I was also under the impression that for more power leaner is better but not to lean as then detonation will occure?

My timing pull is spot on so I don't see it as a problem and BDMAlex set it up and he is the expert IMO.

MAF back in.

To be logged shortly.

I am interested now as to how these work.

If I need a new one I can see it being stripped :signLOL:

New ones are not that expensive.  If you need a new one then I will send you a link for the best place to get one.

Thanks again Alex can you send me the link via PM please.

No logging this morning as plugged it in and laptop died!

Another thing I noticed though when giving it some beans was that the power seemed to be pulsing, does that suggest the ECU pulling the timing back?

Have you checked your fuel trims on block 032, this will give a good indication as to whether your MAF is healthy or not. Also how come your running Fuel 9? I would be running a richer setting such as 6 on Stage 2+.

i too am running fuel 9 on stg 2+ as couple ot tuners i spoke to said you get better results on 9 and to drop it to say 6 to lower EGT's was a fallacy. and yes J - the car is mental with the bdm induction kit on!
Diamond Black Pearl Edition 30, still going strong but now back to Stg 1

I may or may not have a more serious issue!
Ill update when I know.
Colder weather, CAI now fitted, newish plugs and coilpacks.
Timing pull through the roof!
Explains the pulsing issue maybe.
My bad, missed it concentrating on the MAF :ashamed:

Probably explains why I have considered taking things off and standardizing.
D- must pay more attention but I have been mega busy and not really had time for all this stuff.
I will sort it, its a challenge.
How are you finding the engine mount A? I love my VWR one. Took a while to get used to is but brilliant now.
And no I am not asking for the Subframe back :signLOL:

No two cars are the same therefore settings vary car to car. My car definately runs better with a richer fuel setting, any leaner than fuel 7 i start seeing excessive CF's and the ecu compensates by dumping in more fuel. My timing curve is not so good either and EGT's also rocket up to 999 degrees. Same applies with over aggressive timing settings, my car runs best on timing 5. Revo once suggested i even run fuel 5, but yeah different settings will suit different cars depending on mods and other variables  :happy2:

It was running perfect in the summer, so something is wrong.

Your right about different cars though.

9-5-9 mine was running so sweet when it was first put to 2+ at BDM.

Its all gone pear shaped!

I'll sort it but thanks for your input, every little helps matey.
