Black smoke from exhaust in remapped ed30
« on: November 05, 2011, 05:09:05 pm »
I have a Stage 2 superchips(bluefin) remapped GTI Ed30, with Forge twintake and APR TBE. For a while now I seem to be getting black smoke in the low revs mostly 2nd gear on hard acceleration? Has anyone experienced this? or have any idea how to sort it out?

Black smoke under load is usually too much full, running rich.

Best to get it looked at on a dyno where afr's can be monitored fella

My ED30 is standard and doesn't look to put out smoke - however - the lower bumper section seems to get a fair few black spots and the exhaust tips are always black

Yeah air fuel ratio, if theres too much fuel in the map it'll be unburnt and come out the exhaust as black smoke.

It was like this on my evo and ran so rich that it lost me power as it was stopping the turbo spooling as it should. I got it looked at pretty sharpish as too much fuel can cause bore wash and that's never good!!

What's your mpg like?

Mine does the same, I have the same car/ bluefin/dsg. Mine does it the 1st time I plant the throttle, but doesn't appear to repeated every time if I try again on the same journey.

I just put it down to unburnt fuelling or clearing out the Cat from Slower town driving .

I wouldnt worry personally, unless your experiencing performance issues, especially as you say it's only 2nd gear, an not in all gears, which says to me nothing much is wrong.

Mine is dsg too. Can get 37-38 mpg on long commute with super unleaded. short town drives 27-28mpg. Spirited drives mpg in low 20s or less!
Doesnt appear to be any power issues, but only recently switched from carbonio air intake to forge twintake, and havent had much chance to really test car out due to wet roads round here, and problems getting power down.
Was just worried it might be a superchips remapping issue, and whether I should change to Revo, who seem to have good reviews.

Happens on mine when I've been driving like a granny for a while, the first time I give it the beans I get a puff of black out the back and then doesn't happen again for a while. If it happens every time you floor it I'd be worried but if it's just occasional then I'd say it's normal. We all know how black the exhausts can get if not looked after!
