Buying a DSG car

When buying a 2nd hand DSG car, is there anything to check for when taking it for a test drive??  :confused:

Im no expert but I just brought my second DSG Mk5 at the weekend and there were a few things I looked out for:

1) No clunk when you put it form N to D just a gentle sensation letting you know this has happened.

2) It can find Reverse easily and quickly.

3) When going up through the gears you (almost) cannot feel the change only hear it.

4) When idling the car does not stall.

The gear change should be like butter, nice and smooth and almost unnoticeable. If the car has any funny moments on the above situations then cal my walk away but the best thing for you to do would be to drive a few and get a feeling for them.

Also make sure its had its oil service if the car has over 40K miles.

And buy a warranty.  I only know three people that have dsg and they have all had very expensive problems (all rectified under warranty).  I know it's not necessarily a true represention of dsg experiences, but it's put me off owning a dsg car that is not under warranty.

I was lucky buying my Ed30, VW replaced the DSG mechatronics under warranty 10 days before I bought it and issued a new 3 year warranty on the DSG box (Which i have transferred to me)   :drinking:

i would also take a note of the reg of the car, give VW customer services a ring and see if the mechatronics unit has been replaced under warranty... gives you that peace of mind..

Hi Rich, can you clarify what you mentioned above? Does it matter how old the car is and are they still offering the replacement? I have not heard of this problem before? Mines an 04?

Hi Rich, can you clarify what you mentioned above? Does it matter how old the car is and are they still offering the replacement? I have not heard of this problem before? Mines an 04?

as far as i know, a certain batch of mechatronic units were prone to failing - not sure what years it affected. I dont think there was a recall as such but many units were replaced under warranty. i asume VW replaced these faulty units with an improved version? Theres quite a few threads with loads of info on the issue..

can anyone shine more light on this? i just bought a 2006 dsg gti and has had the service done as its on 50k miles but theres no note in the services history of the mechatronic unit being replaced...  :confused:
