Tyre wear - help!
« on: November 14, 2011, 05:21:14 pm »
About 3wks ago I noticed the outside edge of my front passenger side tyre was totally ragged, only about 1.5in in though, the rest was evenly worn and the drivers side was even all the way across, now the tyres themselves were in need of changing anyway but because they were getting low this had become a lot more noticeable. There was no pulling but the pressures were all over the shop, only 26 in this particular tyre, 29 the other and 30's on the rears.
Anyway got new new ones on the front and got the tracking checked which i was told was slightly out. Now I rarely drive the car and at the weekend noticed that although there's no pulling the steering wheel is out, basically you can see the left hand stalk and not the other when in a straight line  :driver:, on top of this I think the same tyre is wearing again in exactly the same place, to the pojnt that the nobly bits on this one have worn off but the others on the back that have covered a good 6k still have them present.
It's going back to get the tracking looked at again and get the steering wheel straightened out and the pressures seem ok but is there anyting else that could be causing this??? Sorry to sound a bit of a thicko  :stupid: but I've noticed while searching a lot of people talkibng about 4 wheel allignment, what exactly is the difference between this and tracking and could this be the root cause of my issue?

it sounds to me like the tracking is out, now years ago tracking was a case of using mirrors on a frame and getting the lines to line up then that would tell you how much in mm it was toeing in or out, now that worked fine but as cars have come on over the years this is no longer a good way, 4 wheel alinement is just that, you have a gauge on each wheel and then you have to set the tracking so all 4 wheels are in line, when done correctly this will make the steering wheel in line aswell (although at work the XC90's can be a real PITA to get spot on)

hope this explains it
