Floor Speakers

Chaps,

Looking to slightly improve my living room audio by reducing the low/mid bass loss by floor mounting some speakers.
I've currently got some Denon SCM37 which I picked up new for about £55 and for a budget speaker, they're very good and are all I need as all rounders. Question is, will I improve the sound slightly by floor mounting them or are dedicated floor standing speakers the way to reduce the bass 'loss'?

The Denon's are currently bookshelf mounted and do sound great despite the location & positioning

Is £45.00 going to improve already good speakers, or should I look at spending more on a dedicated floor standing set?
Just feels like Iv'e already got good audio hardware in a bad setup, hence looking to improve the setup?  Ta.

Floor standers are the only real way you will get solid improvements in bass vs shelf speakers (that you have currently). But the trouble is to get the same quality of sound as a decent set of shelf speakers you will need to be paying significantly more than what you are currently appear to be budgeting.

It also depends on the size of the room.
No point putting floor standers in a small room with a poor floor.
Some stand mount/wall mount i.e. PMC DB1i are absolutely superb and would really rival some equally priced floor standers in the right environment but I suspect they will be out of your price range.
Have you thought about wall mounting them?
Also you won't really solve the 'bass loss' as I find shelf mounting tends to make them boomy. What will happen is you will make them sound how they are supposed to sound and I suspect you will lose some bass as stands/mounts tend to seperate the speakers from poor floors/shelves (spikes on bottom of stands).
Try it but I like I said you could end up going the other way to what you think.
Alternatively, what I would do in your situation, wall/stand mount and find a good quality cheap subwoofer on the 'bay.
What I am trying to say is your suggestion will improve sound quality but not neccesarily the bass response.

As H4RDY says if you looking for more bottom end then a cheap sub is the way to go. If you happy with the sound quality your current setup gives over mid to high end then cheapest and easiest way of getting a bit more bass is a sub!

For reference, the bookshelf speakers I've got now are superb for the money paid, possibly couldn't have bought better but they weren't big money, I appreciate

I certainly am, no need for more really for the room it's in and the rooms natural acoustics (with the volume restrictions too).

FYI unless you have a Cinema amp you will need a sub with speaker level inputs then back out to the speakers.

Will do chief. I understand bringing the speakers down to ear level is wise anyway(?).
What kind of connection does the sub need? I've got a small logitech sub at work at my office desk, never used. I was thinking of grabbing it to bring here. It's one of these - http://www.logitech.com/en-gb/439/232. I think it just uses a standard headphone jack being a desktop mini system so perhaps I need to re-wire some of the connections to use these with my stereo? The sub packs a decent little punch for what it is - again, I don't really demand much more than what this offers given the size of the room.

The Denon's are the best £55 I've ever spent - got the sound quality of some speakers more than double their price

Call your local richer sounds as well, sometimes have some great deals in and most have a demo room where they will let you try before you buy.
