2000 GTI hatch problem

For no apparent reason my key will not activate the release and the key itself will only go part way into the keyway on the hatch of our 2000 GTI.  Likewise the release on the driver's door will not activate the hatch release mechanism.  I'm locked out of the hatch.

Can anyone help me?
