Have a read of this article then. It was done by Thorney Motorsport a while back and they found that V-Power didn't perform as well as expected. The Tesco 99 wasn't far off BP 102. As I said though I run my car on either or and don't notice any difference at all.

Where they sponsored by Momentum when that Article was written though as it is a couple of years old at least?

Also i do remember (i think it was fifth gear) doing a similar test and they got similar results in that. They also tried the octane boosters and found they made no difference at all.

We've got to remember to that the tests carried out were on factory tuned cars, when power gets big certain issues start to be highlighted and we all know what the TFSI engine is like with fuel

I've always used Tesco 99/momentum in all of my cars. In fact my 911 loves it, but to be fair it loves anything super unleaded!

No, tbh dont really visit forums except 'tuners' forums i.e chiptuners, efi101 etc...

I remember that test, was it not on a bogo standard toyota n/a engine. Very different from a turbod engine with adjustable mapping to take into account of the better fuel/octane booster wouldnt you say.

Sounds like there both floored tests when taking our cars into account. Personly i use vpower as the garage is 2 miles down the road and tbh i still would if the tesco garage was closer...... supermarket fuel

I think it was a Civic Type R iirc.

To be honest i think any car that has adjustable mapping to take into account different types of fuel will perform better on higher octane fuel.

I don't agree with this "supermarket fuel is rubbish" hype. It still has to pass the same stringent tests that all other fuels in the UK do. Yes there have been problems in the past. But the big companies have problems too. Anyone remember the Formula Shell debacle from the mid 80's? That ruined engines on an international level.

There is enough anecdotal evidence on the internet to say that Shell Fuel Save is also causing issues.

So it's not all rosy with the "big" companies.

At the end of the day you pays your money and you takes your chances. As long as your happy with your fuel choice then thats all that matters. When i'm at my parents i use Tesco Momentum. When i'm home i use V-Power as it is the closest station to me. The nearest Tesco is 18miles away and a 36 mile round trip outweighs any saving i'd make unless it was the 14p/litre difference i saw between V-Power near me and Momentum at my folks. It isn't its only 3p/litre last i looked.

And certainly where I live all the fuel comes from the same tanks at Fawley, just with different additives.

I've just had a look into shell
Some say it has no ethanol In it...about 8/10 searches I've looked into show it doesn't have it but there has been the odd one that says it does

From what I've seen the fuel all comes from the same refinery and the same pipeline, but then it's all about the additives that goes into the fuel that makes it better or a not so better fuel
Shell do make good fuel and allways have done with only a few problems
Supermarket fuel has had alot more problems but this could be due to publicity etc etc

For me shell will stand out better

Shell do have a idea of what there doing, the specialise in fuel, Morrisons,tesco,sainsburys etc do not...therefore having to ask one of these big company's like shell,BP,esso etc to help them make fuel at a rate that's appealing to the average mum on the way home from the weekly shop....now obviously BP won't make fuel that's the same as there own for a separate comapny so the likes of tesco can undercut them
We all saw the news months ago about the cost of the barrel of fuel...was shocking to see the tax that goes into it! There was about 5p profit for the comapny that made the fuel,rest was tax? Now what I'm asking is we're the 10p per litre price reduction fro
 Sainsburys etc comes from when compare to BP etc......additives maybe? Ethanol?
Hope that makes some kind of sense but what I'm trying to say is that they have to be having costs cut somewhere!

TBH from experience, I felt that V-power seemed to make the car more aggressive but Tesco 99 gave better mpg.

As above, in the end, you make your choices. There are no Tesco petrol stations around where I live so I'll stick with V-power for now.

Is all BP Ultimate now 102 Ron?? Just asking as the pumps at my 2 local BP's still say 97 and one of the sites was refurbed this year. And my Local Esso/Tesco Express is 97 Ron.

I used to be on V-power all the time but the nearest stations are to far away and I cba to plan where I'm going to get near one so I mainly run Momentum now and put V-power in when I'm near a Shell garage (especially when I'm on the south coast as its very cheap down there). Ocasionally stick a tenners worth of BP in when needed but as its on the trunk road its a bit more expensive so its only gets enough to get me by when the light comes on. And tbh I never really notice any difference as all my journeys tend to be short and local so MPG is always pants.

As someone said above most of the fuels come from the same refineries but I don't think they tank share. I'm sure the petrol companies rent/own the same tanks as its not only Vehicle fuel that gets stored in them, they also distribute the aviation and heating fuel etc so I can't see them swapping contents of each tank, more topping them up (unless tank maintenance is req). We've got 4 sites locally, BP, Shell (vehicle and aviation) and Calor gas come from one site, All supermarkets/Total/Jet come from another site and Esso has its own site that does everything from aviation to oils (saying that see a Morrisons Tanker come out of there the other day) and another site for independent companies and GOFF and heating oils etc.
