Cambelt query? UPDATED!!!!
« on: December 29, 2011, 01:11:54 pm »
Can anyone please confirm when exactly and why VW changed the interval at which this was to be changed?
The reason I'm asking is because I'm currently in "discussions" with my (non VW) dealer about getting it changed, when I bought the car a few months ago I specifically asked that the belt be changed if it was going to need it in the near future, they have gone from what my service book says (its an 05 model) and took it as not needing it until 120k and unfortunately I didnt know any better at the time.
Obviously I've now found out that it's either 4yrs or 40/60k depending on who you speak to regardless of the servicing regime you're on. I'd just like this info to help back up my case if need be because not only should it have been done before I bought it, it also invalids the part of the warranty that covers this part should it go. Slightly nervous as the car is now appraoching 7yrs old with 75k on the same belt:confused:

I'd avoid using that particular dealer for any kind of work then as they appear not to know even the basics... :fighting:

All VW dealers I've spoken to say 4yrs or 60k, independants seem to say 4yrs or 40k, that part I'm happy with.

What I'd like to know is when was this changed from the 120k interval thats in my service book and why as the (BMW/Mini) dealer that i'm trying so sort this out with have gone by what my service book says.

ELSA seems to think it's 180 000Km, which would put it about 120k miles in our money.

Sarcasm for free. Anything after that can only be considered as a bonus.

Just because you think you know something, doesn't make you an expert if you've just read it on the internet, y'know.

Surely this must have been changed though? because regardless of who I've spoken to VW or independants they're stating otherwise regardless of the service regime you're on.
Obviously in 2005 it may have been the case as stated in the service book but at what point was 4yrs or 60/40k introduced?
For example what does it say in service books issued with a 55/06 plate cars etc????

My Ed30 was 4 years old last month and only covered 16,000 miles but the cambelt & waterpump was duly changed per the recommened time scale.
Although I dont agree leaving it 120k, if it says that in your manual the normal wording on warranties is that you follow your service regime to your car service manual,so technically it should be covered !!!
Although like most have said it should be done, for peace of mind if nothing else.
Hope it works out favourably for you.

My 07 GTi handbook says check at 60k then every 20k, and change at 120k miles.

I had the cambelt & waterpump changed, annual service, DSG service, & MOT all done on the same day at VW main dealer and total cost £664.
If you just have the cambelt / warterpump done  VW generally quote £399, but i'm amazed how many variations to that appear to crop up on here.
Hope that gives you a guide.
